Texas football: 5 things for Longhorn fans to know about the Oklahoma Sooners

Even though the conferences have changed for Texas and Oklahoma, one thing remains the same.

As it always does, No. 1 Texas (5-0, 1-0) will meet No. 16 Oklahoma (4-1, 1-1) on the state fairgrounds in Dallas on Saturday for the annual Red River Rivalry game. This will be the 120th meeting between these teams. The Longhorns and Sooners were Big 12 adversaries the last 29 times they met, but both have moved to the SEC this year.

Here are five things to know about the Sooners:

1. A newcomer will start, but one Oklahoma QB knows this rivalry

After starting the season with sophomore Jackson Arnold at quarterback, Oklahoma made the switch to freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. ahead of a 27-21 win over Auburn on Sept. 28. A Dallas native and the son of a former Oklahoma cornerback, Hawkins completed 10 of 15 passes and ran for a 48-yard score in the victory.

Neither Hawkins nor Arnold has ever played in a Red River Rivalry game, but OU's third-string quarterback has. Casey Thompson was UT's quarterback when the two teams met in Dallas in 2021, when he threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns in the Longhorns' 55-48 loss. A seventh-year senior who spent the past two years at Nebraska and Florida Atlantic, Thompson has not appeared in any games this season.

Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman answers questions from reporters during a breakout session at Big 12 media days in 2023. The Sooners star is his team's leading tackler and was on the SEC preseason honor team.

2. Will Danny Stutsman sell more T-shirts in Dallas?

Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman drew the ire of some Longhorns last season when he started selling T-shirts that celebrated the Sooners' comeback win at the Cotton Bowl. The shirts, which feature a photo of Stutsman smoking a cigar and doing the "Horns Down" signal on the front and the words "Oklahoma only fears God, Texas fears Oklahoma" on the back, are currently going for $34 on his website.

But in addition to being an entrepreneur, Stutsman is a pretty good linebacker. A member of the SEC's preseason honor team, Stutsman is the Sooners' leading tackler with 40 stops.

3. Oklahoma among NCAA's best in creating turnovers

Oklahoma has forced 13 turnovers and committed five. That plus-8 margin is third-best nationally.

Oklahoma has recovered a nation-high eight fumbles. Three of UT's seven turnovers this season have been lost fumbles.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and Oklahoma's Brent Venables visit before their 2022 game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. This year's Red River Rivalry matchup will be different for a couple of reasons: It will have a 2:30 p.m. kickoff instead of 11 a.m., and the schools are now SEC rivals, not Big 12 rivals.

4. The Sooners are well-rested ahead of Dallas trip

Like Texas, Oklahoma was on a bye last week. Under head coach Brent Venables, OU is 2-0 after a bye. Oklahoma got a week off after last season's Red River Rivalry game and returned to action with a 31-29 win over Central Florida. The Sooners followed their 2022 bye with a 27-13 victory at Iowa State.

During the Steve Sarkisian era at Texas, the Longhorns are 2-1 after bye weeks.

5. Why are Oklahoma teams nicknamed Sooners?

According to Oklahoma, its "Sooner" nickname can be traced back to the state's origins. When Oklahoma was still a territory, settlement was decided by land claims races. Each race was started by a pistol shot, and those who jumped the gun were called "Sooners."

Oklahoma athletic teams were originally referred to as "Rough Riders" and "Boomers," but the "Sooners" nickname has stuck since 1908.
