Texas basketball players reveal some details on their scrimmage against TCU

Reports out of San Antonio last Saturday indicated that Texas basketball controlled TCU in a closed scrimmage.

On Wednesday, while chatting with a handful of media members at the Texas basketball facilities, several Longhorns did nothing to dispel those accounts.

“The scrimmage was good,” said Tramon Mark, a 6-foot-5 wing who arrived from Arkansas in the offseason. “You know, we got a lot of easy baskets, got some easy shots, some open shots. I just feel like we played good as a team.”

By design, details are short from any closed scrimmage. But a source confirmed the accuracy of various reports that had Texas winning 80-52. Sources also said that the Longhorns had issues with too many turnovers and fouls, but leaned on dominant perimeter defense to disrupt the TCU attack.

So, did you dominate TCU, Tramon?

“Maybe,” replied Mark, with a grin.

Texas guard Chendall Weaver says the Longhorns' perimeter defense impressed him in a closed scrimmage against TCU last Saturday. Texas reportedly won the game 80-52. The Longhorns open their season on Nov. 4.

Tramon Mark says Texas basketball looks ready

Mark, a fifth-year graduate student with two seasons of eligibility remaining, spent three years playing for Kelvin Sampson at Houston before spending last season with coach Eric Musselman at Arkansas. He understands coaches want certain workouts closed for a reason, and he knows what to reveal and what to keep behind closed gym doors.

“I played good, but I don’t even know my stats,” he said, when prompted about his performance against TCU.

But Mark has been around enough winning teams to understand what a good squad should look like just days away from the season, which starts for Texas on Nov. 4 in Las Vegas against Ohio State.

“I would say it did look like what it was supposed to look like,” he said. “Of course, we had some mistakes, but for our first scrimmage, it looked like what you want to see.

“It felt like we were all enthusiastic about each other's success on the court, and our bench energy was great. The things we were doing on the court, the plays we were making, everything. … we were all clicking.”

Chendall Weaver, a  6-foot-3 guard who’s back for his second season, said the Longhorns relied on what looks like a 10-man rotation to stifle TCU.

“Everybody can go on this team, and I like that,” he said.

Chendall Weaver likes defense, especially on perimeter

Weaver also likes the size that the revamped roster has on the perimeter. A year ago, Texas leaned heavily on 6-foot guards Tyrese Hunter and Max Abmas, which often led to some defensive mismatches. This year, Weaver and Mark are among a group of perimeter defenders that also include 6-2 Jordan Pope, 6-3 Julian Larry and 6-6 Tre Johnson.

Johnson, a five-star freshman recruit and a McDonald’s All-American, boasts a diverse offensive game and a smooth jumper. But Weaver said he flashed his defensive potential against TCU.

“He (Johnson) is known as an offensive guy, but his defense is really there,” Weaver said. “He plays hard on both ends of the floor. That's what we're going to need to win.”

Weaver said he wants to see more rebounding from a team that is heavy on guards. He did credit 6-11 forward Kaden Shedrick for pulling down “seven or eight rebounds” against TCU, and Weaver estimated that he grabbed six boards against the Frogs.

“We’ve got to learn to stay focused, watch film, and just know that we're going to be a good team,” Weaver said.

Texas, which is No. 19 in the preseason Associated Press poll, will have another closed scrimmage this Saturday in Austin against Colorado.
