Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill gets reflective about the end

Ryan Tannehill took a moment, albeit a brief one, to reflect.

"I spent five years of my life here in this organization," the veteran Tennessee Titans quarterback said Wednesday ahead of his team's Week 18 game. "A lot of great people. I would love to be able to leave it on a win."

And what, exactly, does Tannehill mean by it?

"The season," he answered before pausing for a second. "My time here. The season."

When the Titans (5-11) take the field Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars (9-7) at Nissan Stadium (noon, CBS), it very well may be the last time Tannehill wears a Titans uniform. The 12th-year quarterback's contract expires in March, and the Titans have their quarterback of the future on the roster in rookie Will Levis. Tannehill will have every opportunity to search for a starting job elsewhere, or have his pick of whatever backup job he wants.

Before any of that, he has one more game to play. Maybe.

Levis did not practice Wednesday because of a right foot injury suffered Sunday against the Houston Texans. That injury, compounded by the left ankle sprain he suffered in Week 15, puts Levis' status for the Jaguars game in jeopardy.

Fittingly, the uncertainty with Levis is making it easier for Tannehill to stop his mind from drifting into sentimental thoughts about the past, and curious thoughts about the future.

"Having the chance of playing helps me stay focused," Tannehill said. "I’m sure if I was just kind of sitting around I’d have a little more time. But having the chance to play, keeping my focus on that, I’m trying to prepare myself if need be to be ready to go."

Tannehill could justify a little bit of sentimentality. Whether Sunday is his last game in a Titans uniform or not, he already has put together a résumé to be regarded as one of the best, most productive and most efficient passers in franchise history. Only Steve McNair has more passing yards and passing touchdowns than Tannehill since the team moved to Tennessee. No one who has ever started a game at quarterback in Titans or Houston Oilers history has ever had a better passer rating than Tannehill's 97.9. Only Jacky Lee, who started 10 games across the 1960s, averaged more yards per pass attempt than Tannehill's 7.8.

He led the Titans to three playoff berths, two AFC South titles and one AFC Championship Game. He was the 2019 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He led 14 game-winning drives.

And he's aware it all could be coming to an end after this weekend.

"Yeah, for sure, no doubt. I definitely realize that and have the thoughts," Tannehill said. "I don’t fully sit and reflect on the last five years at this time. The time will come and I’ll definitely do that. But right now, I think I’d be letting down my teammates by letting too much thought into that and not preparing myself to go play."
