Tennessee Titans officially announce details of trade for Chiefs CB L'Jarius Sneed

The Tennessee Titans have officially announced details of the trade to acquire star cornerback L'Jarius Sneed from the Kansas City Chiefs — a trade that didn't require giving up all that much capital, given the return the Titans are getting in the form of one of the league's best lockdown defensive backs.

The team is giving up a third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and swapping seventh-round picks in 2024 (from No. 221 to No. 252) in exchange for Sneed. The Titans reportedly are signing Sneed to a four-year, $76.4 million contract, with $55 million in guaranteed money, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. That makes Sneed the NFL's sixth-highest paid cornerback by average annual value.

Sneed, 27, played his first four seasons with the Chiefs, starting 54 regular-season games and 13 playoff games, including a pair of Super Bowl wins. He ranked among the NFL's leaders in pass breakups, fewest throws targeted his way per coverage snap and lowest passer rating allowed in 2023, a year in which he also made 78 tackles and intercepted two passes.

How L'Jarius Sneed helps Tennessee Titans secondary

The Titans now can pair Sneed with third-year cornerback Roger McCreary and free agent acquisition Chidobe Awuzie, formerly of the Cincinnati Bengals. Awuzie and Sneed replace departing starters Kristian Fulton and Sean Murphy-Bunting. Last season's secondary ranked last in the NFL in both interceptions and pass breakups, and 23rd in yards allowed per pass attempt.

First-year defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson comes to the Titans with a background as a secondary coach. He was the defensive backs coach for the No. 1 passing defense in the NFL each of the past two years, first with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022 and then with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023.

Tennessee Titans NFL draft picks after L'Jarius Sneed trade

The Titans maintain the same number of picks in the 2024 NFL Draft as they had before the Sneed trade. Now they swap just one of their three seventh-round picks with the Chiefs. The Titans don't have a third-round pick in 2024; they shipped that one off to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for the pick that netted quarterback Will Levis in 2023.

Following the Sneed trade, the Titans also will be without a third-round pick in 2025. That's in addition to the Titans trading away their seventh-round pick for 2025 in exchange for kicker Nick Folk.
