Taylor Jenkins expects injury updates on Marcus Smart, Desmond Bane 'in the next day or so'

The Memphis Grizzlies will likely update the injury statuses of Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart "in the next day or so," coach Taylor Jenkins said Thursday.

Jenkins spoke after the Grizzlies' return from the All-Star break and before their return to action on Friday against the LA Clippers. Smart and Bane have both been out for extended periods of time but could still return this season.

Bane has been out since he suffered an ankle injury against the Clippers on Jan. 12. The team said he would be re-evaluated in six weeks after the injury. Smart suffered a finger injury against the Mavericks on Jan. 9, and the Grizzlies also said he would be re-evaluated in six weeks.

General manager Zach Kleiman said after the NBA trade deadline earlier this month that the team was not considering shutting down those players, even as the Grizzlies have struggled while dealing with those injuries and others, including a season-ending shoulder injury for star guard Ja Morant.

Another player who could return this season is Brandon Clarke, who suffered an Achilles' injury last season.

"I think there'll be more of a formal update, probably in the next day or so, on Des and Marcus," Jenkins said. "BC is on a good pathway, hopeful that he'll return before the end of the season, but no exact timeline. His workouts have progressed pretty well, hoping to do some more live stuff with limited contact. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we'll have a little bit more of a ramp up for him."

Jenkins also said he's expecting Jake LaRavia, who has been out since Jan. 13, to return for Friday's game.

"He should be available tomorrow," Jenkins said. "He was a full participant in practice, looked good. We'll talk about the minutes and all that stuff, but he should be a full go tomorrow."

Jenkins has had to constantly shuffle lineups this season, but the Grizzlies (20-36) could at least be getting some players back in the near future.

"I can't wait," Jaren Jackson Jr. said. "I don't really track their rehab as much. Whenever they feel like they're 110, they should come back. Not even 100. 110."
