Studs and Duds from Saints' Week 10 win over Falcons
Darren Rizzi ends the New Orleans Saints seven game losing streak in his first game as interim head coach. The Saints even the season and all time series with the Falcons with this victory. Marquez Valdes-Scantling stood out with multiple deep shots from Derek Carr in his second game as a Saint.
Last time these teams faced off, it was Atlanta who got all the breaks. The roles reversed this time as Younghoe Koo missed three field goals for the first time in his career. Still it was a close game, and the defense had to make a play to close out the game.
Here are the studs and duds from the Saints victory over the Falcons:
Defensive line
The Saints had a pair of critical sacks by Cameron Jordan and Chase Young. Payton Turner had a sack fumble in scoring position. They also excelled in getting their hands up to deflect Kirk Cousins’ passes. Speaking of getting your hands up, John Ridgeway even made an impact on special teams, with a blocked field goal before halftime.
Secondary play
Another one where there was good and bad, except this time it was the unit as a whole. The secondary started off very strong, however as the game went on more and more chunk plays were getting through the secondary, and that made things a little more difficult for the Saints as a whole.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling
Last week was Valdes-Scantling’s Saints debut, but this week was his coming out party. Valdes-Scantling has two deep shots on his first two catches for more than 100 yards. He ended the day with another touchdown, but this one didn't come on a deep shot.
Pete Werner
The linebacker core is one unit we’ve expected to be extremely successful when healthy between Demario Davis and Pete Werner, and while Davis had a great game, Werner was somewhat ineffective overall. He ended the game with only 5 total tackles and 1 pass deflection, and had a few plays where he was caught off guard by motion. Not a horrible performance, but not as great as we’re used to with him.
Ugo Amadi
Ugo Amadi is settling into that role as nickel corner well. Today was easily his best game. He was all around the field making plays. Not only did he get a pass breakup, Amadi also registered three tackles for a loss. The veteran’s versatility has allowed him to go change roles effortlessly, and he made a impact in multiple facets of the game.
