Studs and duds from Panthers' Week 9 win over Saints
Who starred in the Carolina Panthers' second win of the 2024 season?
Here are the studs (and duds) from the 23-22 upset victory over the New Orleans Saints:
Stud: QB Bryce Young
Young completed 16 of his 26 passes for 171 yards, a touchdown and an interception. But his place in the box score doesn't really tell the story about his triumphant performance.
The second-year quarterback continues to take advantage of his second chance, as he built off a relatively positive showing against the stout Denver Broncos defense last week. He looked poised, displayed his beautiful touch and orchestrated the first game-winning touchdown drive of his career.
Dud: Offensive play-calling
Head coach and offensive play-caller Dave Canales tried to use too much spice on the Saints defense. Rather than keeping it simple and efficient, he made the outing rougher on his offense than it should have been—proving to be overly creative on his decisions and designs.
The passing attack involved too many targets near the line of scrimmage. And once again, he shied away from the run at times—even when it was working.
Stud: RB Chuba Hubbard
Hubbard made the run work, albeit on just 15 carries.
He ran for 72 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Dud: RB Miles Sanders
Sanders was a victim of Canales' play-calling, as he lost a combined 10 yards from scrimmage on two carries and two receptions.
With second-round pick Jonathon Brooks likely to debut this upcoming week, Sanders may be completely phased out moving forward. Plus, his trade value—with the deadline on Tuesday—has probably never been lower.
Stud: Ja'Tavion Sanders
Sanders gave us a thrilling glimpse into the future. He displayed his strong hands on four receptions and his run-after-catch ability on a 46-yard gain—the largest of the season for Carolina.
The rookie tight end finished up with a career-high 87 receiving yards.
Dud: Run defense
The Saints ran at will, as they rushed for 197 yards and a touchdown on 41 carries. Running back Alvin Kamara, who was hardly challenged, led the way with 155 rushing yards—his most since 2020.
