Stock watch: Who's up, who's down after 49ers preseason loss
The San Francisco 49ers got their first preseason game out of the way.
They fell 17-13 to the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium on Saturday. There are now only two more to go until the regular season begins.
While fans gear up for the real games to start, it also means the clock is ticking for players looking to stake their claim to starting jobs, depth chart positioning and roster spots.
Here is a look at whose stock went up, and whose stock went down in the preseason opener:
Stock up: Dominick Puni
Puni got the start and looked the part of a starting right guard in the NFL. He'll need to back up his performance with a good finish to the preseason, but the third-round pick off to a terrific start.
STock down: Kick coverage team
The 49ers' kick coverage squad didn't get off to a good start. It gave up a 63-yard return on their first rep of the preseason. There were a ton of missed tackles on the play, and it was reminiscent of some of the coverage struggles the 49ers have had in kick coverage recently. This is something they need to get ironed out before the season starts.
Stock up: Jordan Mason
Mason started and carried five times for 34 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive. He did have a drop on a high throw which isn't great for a player who needs to improve his pass catching. However, he was dominant as a runner and continues to churn out tough yards. He should get a real crack at the backup RB job this year.
Stock down: Ambry Thomas
It wasn't Thomas's best night to open his fourth preseason as a pro. He missed a tackle on a long Titans kick return. He was flagged for holding in the end zone on a third-down stop on the Titans first drive. He also whiffed a tackle on a third-and-10 screen that went for 36 yards. A forearm injury cut his night short and didn't give him a chance for redemption. He's shown he can play in the NFL, but after Saturday he's on the outside looking in at a roster spot.
Stock up: CB Rock Ya-Sin
Ya-Sin played a ton which doesn't usually bode well for veterans. However, he acquitted himself well. He forced an incompletion in the end zone, broke up another pass on the sideline, and showed off the physicality that makes him a potential contributor for San Francisco.
Stock down: RB Matt Breida
It was a tough night for Breida. He didn't enter the game until late in the second half where he was running behind a not-so-great version of the 49ers offensive line. He didn't find a ton of room as a runner, gaining zero yards on six carries. He also fumbled late in the contest. Breida wasn't likely to find his way onto the roster, but his chances to do so were diminished greatly Saturday.
Stock up: DL Kalia Davis
Davis has a chance to contribute to the defensive line rotation this year. He came up with a big tackle for loss and a sack where his effort allowed him to clean up after some heavy pressure. There's a long way to go for him to playing regular snaps, but showing out against an opposing offensive line is helpful.
Stock up: Linebackers
It was a good night for the 49ers linebacking corps. Curtis Robinson, Dee Winters, Jalen Graham and Tatum Bethune all came up with quality plays throughout the game. It looks like De'Vondre Campbell will start alongside Fred Warner, but that third spot is very much up for grabs and it isn't clear which player is going to secure the job. There's also a chance whoever the 49ers wind up cutting from their LB corps catches on and contributes elsewhere. That's a really good group.
