Steelers vs Falcons: Early causes for concern this week
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers get to work and begin preparations to take on the Atlanta Falcons on the road in Week One. Pittsburgh is still working out the kinks in their new-look offense under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Meanwhile, the Falcons have a new head coach in Raheem Morris and a new quarterback in Kirk Cousins.
The Steelers are currently three-point road underdogs but cannot afford to let any games slip in the first half of the season. Here are our early causes for concern this week.
The Arthur Smith effect
I know the storyline is all about Arthur Smith going back to go against his old team but the reality is that Falcons defense knows exactly what Smith likes to do on offense and that could work against the Steelers in a big way.
The new offensive line
We don't know who is starting at left guard yet, there's a rookie starting at center and we aren't positive which side which offensive tackle will be playing. This level of uncertainty is bad for business for a team that wants to run the football.
Slow starts, fast finishes
One of the biggest problems with Mike Tomlin-led teams is the slow start of games. Coming out of the gates slow and being forced to rally last is a hallmark of this team and we worry nothing that's happened this offseason has changed that.
Special teams missteps
The Steelers special teams have had some hiccups in the preseason including some poor kicks by Chris Boswell and problems with the new return rules.
The fans deserve something good
The Steelers fanbase has been chomping at the bit for a good season. Not a season over .500 and an early exit from the playoffs. A good season. Week after week of solid performances. It all starts on Sunday.
