South Carolina football to wear throwback 1980 uniforms with nod to George Rogers in Akron game
COLUMBIA — For the first night game Williams-Brice Stadium this season, South Carolina football is paying tribute to 1980.
The team announced Wednesday that the Gamecocks (2-1, 1-1 SEC) would be wearing throwback uniforms to represent 1980, which is when former running back George Rogers won the Heisman Trophy.
Rogers played for South Carolina from 1977-1980 and became the first player to have their jersey retired while actively playing. He still holds the record at South Carolina for rushing yards in a season with 1,894 (1980) and career with 5,204. Rogers was drafted No. 1 overall in the 1981 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints.
According to the press release, coach Shane Beamer expressed interest in throwback uniforms, and Under Armour, the program's official apparel provider, came back to Beamer with different ideas and variations of a 1980-inspired uniform.
South Carolina hosts Akron (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU), from the Mid-American Conference on Saturday.

"(The jerseys) will even have a white collar resembling the neck rolls that were common in that era," the press release explained.
