Son of NFL legend elevated from Buffalo Bills practice squad against Jets

A Frank Gore is back on the field in the NFL.

Buffalo Bills rookie running back Frank Gore Jr. has been elevated from the practice squad against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.

Gore Jr. will make his debut more than 19 years after his father, future Hall of Famer Frank Gore Sr., was a rookie for the San Francisco 49ers in 2005.

It's a huge opportunity for Gore Jr., who Buffalo needed on the active roster due to an injury to starting running back James Cook. Cook is inactive after suffering a foot/toe injury last week against the Houston Texans. He was only able to practice once this week, Saturday, and in a limited capacity. Cook, who ranks 15th in the league in rushing yards and has five total touchdowns, was listed as questionable on the injury report.

Gore Jr. had an stellar preseason, finishing second in the league - and first among running backs - with 163 rushing yards on 4.9 yards per carry. Gore Jr. was Pro Football Focus' highest-graded running back in the preseason with in 84.3 grade.

Gore Jr., 22, didn't make Buffalo's 53-man roster but was brought back on the practice squad the next day.

The Bills and the Jets are the last two teams Gore Sr. played for. Gore Sr. spent 2019 with the Bills Bills and 2020 with the Jets before signing a one-day contract to retire as a member of the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. He ranks third on the all-time career rushing list with 16,000 yards.
