Social media expresses disdain for Saints backup QBs Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler in 49ers loss
Overreaction was abound across Saints social media after rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler made his debut for New Orleans, thoroughly making a fine first impression as he finished out the 16-14 win over the Arizona Cardinals going 9-for-17 passing for 70 yards with a rushing touchdown.
Some spoke up on how former Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener, who Rattler is competing against for the second spot on the depth chart behind starting quarterback Derek Carr, should have received more recognition as arguably the quietly better signal-caller of the day after he ended out his showing 9-of-13 passing for 107 yards with some bright moments of his own that seemed to go unnoticed.
None of those sentiments were reflected toward either quarterback during Sunday night's 16-10 loss to the 49ers as both Haener and Rattler managed the game well for the better part, but did make some key mistakes that may or may not have decided the overall outcome.
Rattler was 4-of-8 passing with a fumble, while Haener ended his night with an under thrown pass to AT Perry that could have instead served as the game-winning touchdown, completing 7 of his 13 passing attempts for 76 yards.
Here's a look at what social media had to say about Haener, Rattler and more following the team's first loss of the 2024 preseason:
Jake Haener is definitely QB2; Spencer Rattler continues to disappoint and a lesson is if you want to draft a QB, go for Rounds 1 or 2, if not, wait for a UDFA.

Jake Haener had the most yards out of the #Saints QBs tonight. He definitely could have done better, though.

Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler REALLY disappointed tonight

Antonio Pierce said it best: “You can’t take the good and not take the bad. Wish it went well for both gentlemen. It just didn’t, and we’ll evaluate. They both had opportunities.” Same applies for Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. #Saints

Jake Haener has yet to score a TD in the preseason 💀 sure Rattler wasn’t perfect today but that’s in large part due to the protection and he was still accurate and didn’t make any “risky” throws

#Saints UDFA CB Rico Payton weathered a lot of targets and getting picked on in training camp and now has turned in two impressive preseason games.

Funny moment while I'm thinking about it: Khristian Boyd gets hurt and goes into the blue tent. He comes out, tests his leg and says "I'm good," throws his helmet on and runs back onto the field.
The problem: He wasn't supposed to be out there. Gotta love the enthusiasm tho.— Jeff Nowak (@Jeff_Nowak) August 19, 2024
