Sha'Carri Richardson trips on shoelace, wins 100m to qualify for 2024 Paris Olympics

A stumble at the start of the race and an untied Nike cleat didn’t slow down Texas native Sha’Carri Richardson from winning the 100-meter Olympic qualifier in Oregon.

Richardson handled her business on the track, finishing with a time of 10.71 seconds at the Olympic trials at Hayward Field on Saturday.

Here’s what we know about Richardson and this summer’s Olympics.

100-meter qualifier for the 2024 Paris Olympics

Richardson participated in the 100-meter heat race in Eugene, Oregon. She was the favorite to win the race, but there were some issues. At the start of the race, Richardson stumbled but managed to pick up speed and finish in first place with a time of 10.71 seconds. It was the fastest women’s 100-meter time in the world. Even more remarkable is that cameras caught Richardson running with her right shoelace untied.

Richardson’s teammates, Melissa Jefferson (10.80) and Twanisha Terry (10.89), finished second and third, also qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Where is Sha’Carri Richardson from?

Richardson is a Dallas native. She attended Carter High School, a Dallas-area school that’s mentioned in the book “Friday Night Lights.”

In 2019, Richardson shattered two U20 world records on the same day at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships. She first claimed victory in the 100m with a time of 10.75 seconds, surpassing Marlies Göhr's 42-year-old record. Despite being narrowly defeated in the 200m, Richardson's time of 22.17 seconds broke Allyson Felix's record set at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Is this Richardson’s first Olympic games?

At 24 years old, the Paris Olympics will be Richardson’s first Olympic Games.

In 2021, Richardson emerged as a formidable contender against Jamaica's dominance in the 100m by securing an apparent victory at the US Olympic Trials. However, she was later disqualified and handed a one-month suspension after testing positive for THC (cannabis), a substance banned under World Anti-Doping Agency rules. This disqualification led to her not being selected for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Richardson, who was raised by her grandmother, shared that she used marijuana as a coping mechanism after learning her biological mother had died.

In 2021, she vowed to return to athletic competition.

“I want to take responsibility for my actions," she said. "I know what I did. I know what I'm supposed to do. I know what I'm allowed not to do, and I still made that decision."

Sha'Carri Richardson is the fastest woman in the world

In 2023, Richardson became the fastest woman in the world. She ran a 10.65 to win her first-ever world title in the women’s 100 meters. Her time set a championship record, breaking the mark held by Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce by .02 seconds.

When is the 2024 Paris Olympics?
