SEC women's basketball power rankings: South Carolina lone undefeated team in league play

Auburn struck out on its first three tries in SEC play. No way it stood a shot against No. 7 LSU women's basketball, the reigning NCAA champion, right?

Johnnie Harris' squad, which only had one player averaging double figures in Honesty Scott-Grayson and struggled mightily to score while Kim Mulkey's bunch paced the NCAA in scoring at more than 94 points per game, shocked the SEC, outplaying LSU, 67-62 on Sunday afternoon.

Auburn not only held LSU to its lowest point total this season, it found more offense from senior guard JaMya Mingo-Young, who had 13 points and the game-sealing steal off Angel Reese with 10 seconds left.

Another team at the bottom of the standings, Missouri, knocked off Vanderbilt in Nashville to hand the Commodores their first SEC loss.

On to this week's SEC power rankings:

1. South Carolina (16-0, 4-0)

Last week: No. 1

Up next: Jan. 21 at Texas A&M; Jan. 25 at LSU

It only took two weeks of SEC play for South Carolina to be looking down on every other team in the standings. Oh, and Ashlyn Watkins dunked on Kentucky on Monday night.

2. LSU (16-2, 3-1)

Last week: No. 2

Up next: Jan. 18 at Alabama; Jan. 21 Arkansas

Kim Mulkey has repeatedly said her team would have no problem scoring the ball. I guess the part she left out was it should have avoided playing at Auburn.

3. Mississippi State (14-4, 2-2)

Last week: No. 3

Up next: Jan. 18 Tennessee; Jan. 22 at Florida

If you don't know about Lauren Park-Lane yet, you need to be paying attention – she's playing better than any other point guard in the league right now.

4. Texas A&M (14-3, 2-2)

Last week: No. 6

Up next: Jan. 21 South Carolina; Jan. 25 at Missouri

Of any team in the top four this week, Joni Taylor's Aggies had the best win, a dominating win over Tennessee. Their loss, on the road at LSU, just got away from them in the second half.

5. Vanderbilt (15-2, 3-1)

Last week: No. 3

Up next: Jan. 18 Auburn; Jan. 21 at Tennessee

Now, the real work begins for Shea Ralph as she'll try to keep Vandy from venturing down a slippery slope after its first conference loss.

6. Tennessee (10-6, 3-1)

Last week: No. 7

Up next: Jan. 18 at Mississippi State; Jan. 21 Vanderbilt

Tennessee's glimmer of hope is that Rickea Jackson is elevating her level of play against the tougher competition in the SEC; 10 points against Texas A&M isn't good enough.

7. Alabama (15-4, 2-2)

Last week: No. 4

Up next: Jan. 18 Alabama; Jan. 21 at Auburn

Kristy Curry's Crimson Tide is starting is off to an inconsistent start in SEC play, and in this league that's a quick way to tumble down the standings – just like these power rankings.

8. Arkansas (13-5, 2-2)

Last week: No. 9

Up next: Jan. 21 at Arkansas; Jan. 25 Kentucky

If the rest of Arkansas' lineup can maintain its level of play when freshman sensation Taliah Scott returns from injury, Mike Neighbors' team might be a sneaky team to look out for.

9. Ole Miss (11-6, 1-3)

KIM MULKEY ON FINAL SEQUENCE AT AUBURN Kim Mulkey explains late play with Angel Reese in LSU women's basketball's loss at Auburn

Last week: No. 8

Up next: Jan. 21 at Georgia; Jan. 25 Florida

Guess every game for Ole Miss is going to be close, and so far it hasn't been able to figure out ways to finish games.

10. Auburn (12-5, 1-3)

Last week: No. 11

Up next: Jan. 18 at Vanderbilt; Jan. 21 Alabama

If there hadn't been witnesses – a record-size crowd of 7,720 – at Neville Arena on Sunday, would anyone had believed it if I had said Auburn beat LSU?

11. Florida (10-6, 1-3)

Last week: No. 10

Up next: Jan. 22 Mississippi State; Jan. 25 at Ole Miss

It took a special performance from Leilani Correa to beat a hapless Georgia team at home Sunday, and it's going to take more special performances for the Gators to really compete this season.

12. Missouri (10-7, 1-3)

Last week: No. 13

Up next: Jan. 18 Georgia; Jan. 21 at Kentucky

What better way to get your first SEC win than to knock off an undefeated team. Can Mizzou capitalize?

13. Kentucky (8-10, 1-3)

Last week: No. 12

Up next: Jan. 21 Missouri; Jan. 25 at Arkansas

Kentucky won't play again for a week. Considering how things are going, the break could be seen as a win for the Wildcats.

14. Georgia (10-7, 1-3)

Last week: No. 14

Up next: Jan. 18 at Missouri; Jan. 21 Ole Miss

Three straight losses for Katie Abramson-Henderson's Bulldogs and now a trip Missouri, which just beat Vanderbilt. Doesn't look encouraging.
