Saints sign another linebacker after Demario Davis, Pete Werner injuries
Here's that addition at linebacker we expected after this week's free agent tryouts. The New Orleans Saints announced Tuesday that they had signed linebacker Mike Rose, who played college football at Iowa State.
Injuries have hit the position hard in recent days. Rookie draft pick Jaylan Ford hasn't practiced since July 31 while dealing with an unspecified injury, and starters Demario Davis and Pete Werner have been sidelined with hamstring and shoulder injuries, respectively, though head coach Dennis Allen downplayed the severity of their ailments. In at least Davis' case he'd be playing if this were the regular season.
As for Rose? He's listed at 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds and played college football at Iowa State, where he started all 49 games he appeared in. He was highly productive and won recognition on both the All-Big 12 first team and the conference's Defensive Player of the Year award in his 2021 junior year. He's spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins as well as the spring-league St. Louis Battlehawks, who competed in the XFL before its merger with the USFL led to the creation of the USFL.
He's got a tough road ahead of him. Rose will be competing with other established pros like D'Marco Jackson, Khaleke Hudson, and Monty Rice as well as youngsters Anfernee Orji, Isaiah Stalbird, and Nephi Sewelll (once he's recovered from ACL surgery). The Saints typically roster just five or six linebackers, but a strong summer could help Rose enter the conversation for a spot on their depth chart in September.
In a corresponding move, offensive lineman Chandler Brewer was designated to injured reserve. He signed with the team only on Aug. 1 before going down with an injury on Aug. 5. We'll wish him a speedy recovery.
