Saints looking into linebacker depth with three tryouts
The New Orleans Saints have been looking into reinforcements at various positions this offseason, including wide receiver, tight end, and most recently, linebacker. Injuries during training camp have been immense, and with starters missing a little bit of time, filling out the rotation for early preseason and training camps is a necessity. According to NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill, the Saints took a look into the linebacker position, working out three different free agents on Monday.
While none have been signed as of the writing of this article, here is a quick look into each of these players' backgrounds, as well as what they could bring to the Saints upon their signing if it occurs. Additionally, we will take a look at the current linebacker depth chart and where they stand injury wise.
Easton Gibbs
Easton Gibbs is a 6-foot-0 and 232 pound linebacker out of Wyoming who had a relatively strong NFL Scouting Combine performance. He ended with a 4.73 second 40-yard dash, 6.98 second three-cone drill, 20 bench reps, and a 9-foot-8 broad jump as highlights. He had an extremely productive sophomore and junior seasons in college, putting up the following statlines:
Gibbs ended up going undrafted in the 2024 NFL draft, and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks on May 3, however on July 18 he was placed on the active/non-football injury or illness list, which would lead to him being released on July 31. Ultimately, he has the production throughout college and the physical traits to make an impact, so he could be an intriguing piece if signed by the Saints.
Jordan Kunaszyk
Jordan Kunaszyk is a 6-foot-3 235 pound linebacker from California University, posting a 4.67 Relative Athletic Score, back in 2019. Kunaszyk has played for three teams in his NFL career, after being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Carolina Panthers. He spent 2019 with the Panthers, 2020-2021 with the Washington Football Team, and then 2022-2023 with the Cleveland Browns. He primarily played a strong role in special teams, garnering anywhere from 59% to 82% of special teams snaps. However, he also received 157 defensive snaps total for the Cleveland Browns, which indicates he may see more of a defensive role soon. He did start two games in 2023 for the Browns as well, which is a positive sign, and shows he could be at minimum a special teams asset to help out the younger linebackers.
Mike Rose
Mike Rose fits into the stereotypical Saints athletic score realm, with a 9.07 Relative Athletic Score and coming in at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds. He was Big 12 Defensive Player of the year in 2020, and 2x First-Team All-Big 12 in 2020 and 2021. Rose signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022 as an undrafted free agent, then moved on to the St. Louis Battlehawks to play out the season, before trying out with the Miami Dolphins in 2023 and returning to the Battlehawks for the season. While he has not had an NFL opportunity on the roster beyond training camps, he has performed well at the collegiate level and has the athletic traits to be an intriguing depth player for the Saints.
Current linebacker injuries at training camp
As of right now, there have been three linebacker injuries of note at Saints camp, which are to Demario Davis, Pete Werner, and Jaylan Ford. Davis is dealing with a hamstring injury, Werner a shoulder injury, and Ford has not practiced since July 31 with an unspecified injury after missing most of the spring due to sports hernia surgery. These three injuries are all crucial, as two are to presumed starting caliber players, and the other is to a 2024 draft pick for the Saints. This has created the need for linebacker depth, as even if all three become cleared within a short time period and this is just precautionary, it is good to have backups to work in camp and prove challenging to the offense.
Active depth chart and injuries
As of right now, the active linebacker depth chart (with injuries) looks rather rough. John Hendrix of the Saints News Network recently posted the first unofficial depth chart for the Saints. Here is the updated spots and their injuries currently faced:
