Who Ryan Silverfield heard from after Memphis football beat Florida State, including Penny Hardaway

Memphis football's win at Florida State on Saturday had people around the country talking about the Tigers.

Coach Ryan Silverfield said he had hundreds of texts when he checked his phone after the game. He also saw the posts on social media from Grizzlies star Ja Morant, who attended Memphis' win over Troy earlier this month, and from the Tennessee Titans.

"What that does is it just gives you a sense of pride of the people in Memphis," Silverfield said Monday. "It was great to hear from (men's basketball) Coach (Penny) Hardaway. 'This is great for our city, this is great for our university, thanks.' So many of the coaches around here, the board members, the president, and then some NFL head coaches. That's cool, because it means people are paying attention. Any time that means people are watching what the team and the program are doing on a national stage, it's phenomenal."

The No. 23 Tigers (3-0) went to Tallahassee and knocked off the Seminoles (0-3) and former Memphis coach Mike Norvell. The Tigers jumped out to a 20-3 lead in the eventual 20-12 win, and the top storyline was again the revamped Memphis defense under new defensive coordinator Jordon Hankins.

Silverfield called the win "monumental" on Saturday, and he echoed that on Monday.

"Obviously a great and historic win for our program and its history," he said. "Proud of the guys and the way they fought. It was a team win."

Silverfield said he hasn't been able to respond to all of the congratulatory messages.

"All that being said, look, that was just another game in our books," he said. "I know it's meaningful to so many, and we appreciate that. And I understand where it stands in the history of this wonderful program. But right when we landed, my sights and thoughts turned to Navy. That's the next opponent, and it's the most important game of the season."

The Tigers play at Navy (2-0, 1-0 AAC) on Saturday (2:30 p.m. CT, CBS Sports Network).
