Rutgers football RB Sam Brown out for season | What it means for Scarlet Knights offense

PISCATAWAY – Rutgers football running back Sam Brown is out for the remainder of the season with a lower-body injury, coach Greg Schiano announced Wednesday.

Brown suffered the injury in the Scarlet Knights' 42-7 loss to Wisconsin on Saturday.

It’s the latest crushing injury for Brown, who along with leading rusher Kyle Monangai formed a formidable 1-2 punch for the Scarlet Knights’ running game.

Without Brown, Rutgers will likely look to true freshman Antwan Raymond to step up into that role, starting with Saturday’s game against UCLA at SHI Stadium (noon, FS1).

Rutgers also has second-year running back Ja'shon Benjamin on the depth chart, as well as true freshman Gabe Winowich.

Raymond has played in three games and has rushed for 137 carries on 27 carries with two touchdowns.

"He's getting better," Schiano said. "He flashed early but that was end of game, kind of late-game stuff. So now both he and the whole running back room are going up to have to step up. You can't play with one back the whole game, it doesn't work that way. Now's the time."

Brown through five games rushed for 201 yards on 40 carries with three touchdowns, two of which came in the Scarlet Knights’ win over Virginia Tech.

The latest injury is another crushing blow for Brown, who burst on the scene with a 101-yard performance in a win over Indiana in 2022, but broke his foot late in the game and ended up missing the final five games of the season.

That injury also limited him for much of last year.

Brown, a Philadelphia native, looked much more explosive this season but now he faces another arduous recovery process.
