The Pittsburgh Steelers weren't in the mix for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Reporting Monday night from NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco indicated the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots had deals in place for Aiyuk. The Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers were teams Aiyuk was able to negotiate a long-term contract with, but neither had worked out a trade with the 49ers.

Now the tide has turned for Pittsburgh.

ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday reported the 49ers and Steelers had re-entered trade talks surrounding Aiyuk. Maiocco followed with a report that Pittsburgh had previously been unwilling to meet the 49ers' demands in a trade.

That's one of the big hangups for San Francisco. If they're going to get any value in an Aiyuk trade, they have to get a significant haul back in the deal. Ideally they'd add another receiver who could replace Aiyuk. If they're not getting a receiver, they'd likely want a starting-caliber player at another key position.

Pittsburgh may have to be willing to deal a player like defensive end Alex Highsmith, or cornerback Joey Porter Jr. along with draft compensation to complete a trade.

If they're going to offer an offensive lineman and picks, for example, it's unlikely the 49ers would agree to that deal.

Aiyuk has made it clear the Steelers are one of his preferred destinations. If they have what he deems an acceptable contract on the table, he'd likely okay the trade. Once the 49ers have an acceptable deal with a team Aiyuk will agree to sign with, we'll see a trade.

Until then, it's likely the standoff will continue.
