Will Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning start for Texas vs ULM? Steve Sarkisian says no decision yet

Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said he has not yet named a starting quarterback for the Longhorns' Week 4 matchup against Louisiana-Monroe during a conference call Wednesday with reporters.

The uncertainty stems from an injury to starting quarterback Quinn Ewers that Sarkisian described as an abdominal strain.

Asked if Ewers' backup, Arch Manning, had taken the first-team reps with the offense in practice so far this week, Sarkisian said Manning had "done a really good job with all the reps that he's gotten."

"Arch has got a really good understanding of what we're trying to do," Sarkisian said. "Even though we're putting in a new game plan, I think he understands the premise of the plays that we have in our system. And then, yes, we're dressing them up certain ways and different things, but I think he has a good firm understanding of the premise of those plays. And so when he gets in, he can operate them to a high level."

During his weekly press conference on Monday, Sarkisian categorized Ewers as questionable for Texas' game against the Warhawks (2-0) on Saturday (7 p.m., ESPN+).

If Ewers can't play, Manning would step up for the Longhorns (3-0) as he did last week against UTSA.

The redshirt freshman completed 9 of his 12 pass attempts against the Roadrunners, accumulating 223 yards and throwing four touchdown passes. He also rushed for an additional 53 yards and a score.

Quinn Ewers injury: Texas football QB injured in game against UTSA

Ewers injured his oblique while completing a pass to tight end Gunnar Helm during the Longhorns' blowout victory over UTSA.

Helm gained 49 yards and hurdled a defender on the play, so it took a while for the Texas sideline to become aware of Ewers' injury, Sarkisian said earlier this week.

Running backs coach Tashard Choice was the first to notice, and pointed it out to Sarkisian, who called a run on the next play.

"I think what (Ewers) thought was it was just going to kind of go away," Sarkisian said earlier this week. "So he stayed in for one more play, and then realized, 'I probably need to get this looked at.'"
