No. 9 will be on the pine.

Yesterday, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales didn't seem too sure about trotting out starting quarterback Bryce Young this preseason. Well, he tipped his hand—as he's now confirmed that Young is not hitting the field for the summer opener against the New England Patriots on Thursday night.

"Bryce Young will not play," Canales told reporters on Tuesday. "And then we'll take that kinda week to week—and get a sense for, 'Do we need to get him out there in this system and, kind of, get him a few series?' That's something that I've done in the past. We've done both. So for this game, he will not play."

Canales was then asked how this situation for him compares to last year's, when he was the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Different situation in Tampa last year," he replied. "We had a quarterback competition—Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield. So we wanted them out there getting those opportunities.

"This is different. We know who our guy is, and he's doing a fantastic job. The growth and all that matters. I've seen the plus side of goin' out there and just being able to have the cadences, the mixes, the plays coming in, the play clock, the situations and all that. Those are really important as well. But I also know, we're depending on those guys as well."

Backup Andy Dalton, who is currently dealing with a quad injury, is also not expected to play. That'll leave the Panthers with undrafted rookie Jack Plummer and veteran Jake Luton, who was officially signed on Monday.
