The Carolina Panthers will not field Bryce Young and Andy Dalton in their preseason opener on Thursday night against the New England Patriots. They will, however, have . . .

. . . Jack Plummer and Jake Luton.

Well, head coach Dave Canales spoke about his available quarterbacks following Tuesday's practice. He began by giving a bit of insight into Plummer, who the team has rostered since the spring.

"Yeah, I've learned the guy's a hard worker," Canales stated. "I learned that he's very detailed in what he does. I feel like he's been really sharp with the different changes that happen at the line. Really just, like, the mechanisms, the cadences and all that stuff—I think he's sharp there. He's a great athlete. He's got a big arm. He's showcased that a couple times, and love his mobility, and he's really got a cool demeanor about him."

Plummer, who signed with Carolina as an undrafted free agent, split his college career between three programs—Purdue (2019 to 2021), California (2022) and Louisville (2023). That final year—which ended in a Third-team All-ACC selection—saw the 6-foot-5, 220-pounder complete 64.8 percent of his passes for 3,204 yards, 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Canales was then asked if the lack of experience under center could complicate their evaluations for the rest of the offense during exhibition play.

"Not that way Jack's been playing," he replied. "So, that's the cool part. I'm excited about that. And we brought in Jake Luton as well. A guy that's been around, a couple of different teams. I was with him in Seattle for a little bit. So a guy that knows how to play football and function—that's what we really needed to feel good about the evaluation and how important that is."

Luton spent much of last season with the Panthers, mostly as part of their practice squad. He appeared in all three of their preseason contests in 2023—connecting on eight of his 19 passing attempts for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
