Panthers defeat Rangers in overtime to knot Stanley Cup Eastern Conference series at 2-all

SUNRISE — It's now a best-of-three series in the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference finals after the Florida Panthers broke the New York Rangers' overtime roll.

Sam Reinhart scored the game-winner 1:12 into overtime on a power-play goal and the Panthers defeated the Rangers 3-2 Tuesday to tie the series at 2-2.

"That's the way playoffs go sometimes. Nice to be on the right side of one," Reinhart said, referring to the previous two games won by New York in OT. "We're trying to play on our toes, wear down the other team. We were able to stick with it."

Florida coach Paul Maurice said the game-winning play was as well-executed as it could be — a wrist shot from an area Reinhart had been fed the puck by Aleksander Barkov so many times on the power play during the regular season.

“There wasn’t a mistake," he said. "There were just two really good players making a play.”

Former Panther Vincent Trocheck gave New York a 1-0 lead with its first power-play goal of the series, blasting a one-timer past Sergei Bobrovsky 8:51 into the game.

The Panthers answered back with fire in the second period. Sam Bennett got things started 8:45 into the period, jamming home a loose puck. Carter Verhaeghe gave Florida the lead less than four minutes later with a power-play goal.

Alexis Lafrenière tied up the game 3:28 into the third period to help New York force overtime.

However, the Panthers came out on fire and with an attitude.

"Let's win it in the first few minutes," Matthew Tkachuk said of the mood of the home team heading into OT.

The Panthers, who went over 13 minutes without allowing a shot attempt in the third period, did not falter in overtime as they did in Game 3.

“We just had to believe it was going to come at some point and it did,” captain Barkov said. “We just have to keep working hard and not get frustrated. Enjoy what we do, enjoy the hard work we put in and it’s going to come eventually.”

Here are three takeaways from Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final with Game 5 set for Thursday at Madison Square Garden:

The Panthers went 2-for-4 on the power play to power their way through the Rangers. But even their first goal came after a few strong looks on the power play.

Bennett jammed the first Florida goal in seconds after a power play ended where the Panthers applied a lot of pressure up front. That opened up the confidence to thread two big chances together and Reinhart and Verhaeghe came up with goals.

“It’s big,” Bennett said “Our power play was struggling a little bit and we’re starting to get in a rhythm now. Two huge power-play goals for us.”

Rangers finally figure out Panthers' penalty kill

After going 0-for-8 on the power play to start the series, the Rangers finally bested the ultra-aggressive Panthers' penalty kill.

With smoother puck moving and quicker decision-making, they were able to generate multiple good looks before Trocheck wired home their first power-play marker of the series. That continued into the second power play of the game, too. In total, they rattled off nine of their 12 first-period shots on the power play and it helped put them ahead early.

The Panthers did a great job generating quality first-opportunity chances in Game 4, but when it came to getting rebounds or getting their shots through on net, they had serious problems.

New York did a great job of boxing out on rebound opportunities and preventing Florida from getting bodies in front of goaltender Igor Shesterkin and it made his life a whole lot easier. The Rangers led 28-8 in blocked shots at the end of regulation.

“He is arguably one of the best goalies in the world, so he’s going to make the saves,” Reinhart said of Shesterkin. “I think when the game is tight and we play the way we play, we’re going to generate chances. The more we can stick to our structure, the more comfortable we will be. You gotta believe that one’s going in.”
