New Orleans Saints practice squad tracker: Instant analysis on every pickup
Tuesday's round of NFL roster cuts is the big draw, but roster management continues throughout the wee with practice squads taking shape on Wednesday. The NFL transactions wire processed waiver claims around the league at 11 a.m. CT and now we know which players cleared and who was picked up elsewhere.
So where does that leave the New Orleans Saints? We're tracking every report to find out. Teams can keep 16 players on their practice squads (six veterans and ten pros with three or fewer accrued seasons), plus an International Player Pathway program exception, if it applies to them. Check our predictions against the results and see how we did.
Practice squad signings will be officially announced at 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday, so stay tuned for final confirmation. And more moves should be expected in the days ahead as free agents try out, so this isn't really a final list. But here's our instant analysis on every reported signing:
1. S Johnathan Abram
Per NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill and Nola.com's Luke Johnson. Abram has been competing to start next to Tyrann Mathieu and this gives him an avenue to keep that going. Look for him to get called up to the 53-man roster at some point this season, whether he wins that competition with Will Harris and Jordan Howden or not. He's one of six vested veterans who can sign with their practice squad.
2. WR Equanimeous St. Brown
Per NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill. St. Brown is another one of the six vested veterans who can sign with the practice squad. He made a lot of plays in the preseason and brings a combination of rare size and pro experience the team could use in the receiving corps. We'll see how many games he dresses for given that there were six wideouts on the initial 53-man roster.
3. LB Isaiah Stalbird
Per NewOrleans.Football's Mike Triplett. Stalbird is the first miss for our predictions -- we went with Khaleke Hudson and Andrew Dowell at linebacker, and keeping Stalbird would've meant there are nine linebackers on the team between the 53-man roster and practice squad. We'll see whether Hudson or Dowell join him, or if the Saints have other players in mind.
