OU softball rallies past Miami (Ohio) in Love's Field opener on Kinzie Hansen walk-off HR

NORMAN — Kinzie Hansen closed out the Love’s Field opener in much the same way she closed out Marita Hynes Field.

Hansen blasted a two-run homer to left-center field to walk-off the win, ending a wild 9-7 OU win over Miami (Ohio) on Friday where the Sooners fell behind quickly, battled back slowly to tie it in the fifth, took the lead in the sixth with four runs, then quickly let the lead slip away in the seventh before recording an out.

The Sooners (15-0) have won 68 consecutive games, stretching their NCAA-record winning streak.

OU will play Liberty later Friday in the second game of the doubleheader.

In the Sooners’ Marita Hynes Field finale, Hansen blasted a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to tie the Super Regional Game 2 vs. Clemson, two innings before OU ultimately won it.

The stakes weren’t quite as high Friday, but they were still plenty big, as the Sooners opened their sterling new ballpark with a victory.

With the game tied 3-3, Riley Ludlam’s pinch hit broke open the offensive floodgates for the Sooners in the sixth.

Jayda Coleman followed with a two-run homer to right, followed by Kasidi Pickering’s solo shot down the right-field line.

From there, it looked like the Sooners would cruise through the final inning.

Miami hadn’t recorded a hit since their second home run of the first inning, and OU reliever Karlie Keeney had cruised to that point.

But the RedHawks hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to start the seventh to tie the game.

OU catcher Kinzie Hansen trots to home plate after hitting the game-winning home run Friday in the seventh inning of a 9-7 win against Miami (Ohio) in the first game played at Love's Field in Norman.

Miami hit five home runs in the game, the first time the Sooners have given up even three since June 6, 2022 vs. UCLA in the Women’s College World Series.

The Sooners’ debut in their new home did not get off to a rousing start.

Nicole May walked the leadoff hitter, and then after a strikeout, Miami’s Karli Spaid hit a homer to right center on the first pitch she saw.

Holly Blaska followed with a solo homer to right to put OU into a 3-0 hole.

After that, May settled in, working into the fourth without giving up another run.

The Sooners looked like they had an ideal chance to charge back immediately, loading the bases with no outs.

OU outfielder Jayda Coleman (24) celebrates after scoring on an RBI from Ella Parker on Friday against Miami (Ohio).

But OU managed only one run, after Tiare Jennings popped out on the infield, Ella Parker drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Rylie Boone struck out looking.

While May kept the Sooners in striking distance, the offense struggled to find its footing until the fourth.

That’s when Boone’s bunt single and Kinzie Hansen’s double set up an RBI groundout.

An inning later, Brito tied it with the Sooners’ first home run in their new home — a no-doubt shot into the upper tier of bleachers in left.

The sixth began with Hansen drawing a walk, moving up on a ground ball and then scoring on Ludlam’s single.

Officials reviewed whether Hansen left early at second base but the review went the Sooners’ way and the run stood.
