Disaster in the desert: Jets outmatched from start to finish in 31-6 loss to Cardinals
The Jets came into Sunday’s game in Arizona with high spirits and for good reason.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the offense had come alive in the second half 10 days earlier, snapping a five-game losing streak with a 21-13 victory over the Texans at MetLife Stadium.
The three teams in front of them (Bengals, Colts and Broncos) all lost before Gang Green’s game against the Cardinals in Sunday's late-afternoon slate, giving them a chance to inch closer to the third and final Wild Card spot in the AFC.
Needing a big-time performance, the Jets failed yet again in an embarrassing 31-6 loss to the Cardinals in Week 10.
The Jets defense was nonexistent, missing tackles all game long and surrendering scores on each of Arizona’s first five drives, the first three of them touchdowns.
Cardinals’ QB Kyler Murray played a nearly perfect game, notching more total touchdowns (three) than incompletions (two) and setting a franchise record with 17 straight completions against a defense that looked like it didn’t even make the trip to the desert.
Rodgers clearly looked his 40 years, not throwing the ball down the field – a problem that’s been an issue all season long – and was sacked three times, the fourth game in which that has happened this season.
Outside of the second half against the Texans last week, the Rodgers and Davante Adams duo has largely been a failure, converting on only six of 13 targets and not on the same page over and over in Adams’ first four games with the organization.
Sunday was a perfect example of two teams heading in completely opposite directions.
The Cardinals are a good, young team that has continuously gotten better as the season has gone along.
On the other hand, the Jets look every bit an old, slow and inconsistent team on both sides of the ball that now, three months into the season, has yet to put it all together for a complete game in all three facets.
With no margin of error moving forward for the Jets after their seventh loss in 10 games, it’s now or never for this team to essentially win out to have any slim chance of making the postseason, with just one loss likely continuing the longest playoff drought in North American professional sports (NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL) at 13 seasons.
Here was our live analysis and updates from the Jets-Cardinals Week 10 matchup in the desert:
Cardinals 31, Jets 6: 4:13 left in third quarter
This game's now officially out of hand with the Cardinals scoring on a fifth consecutive drive and their fourth touchdown of the day with QB Kyler Murray punching one in on the ground for the second time today.
This is a brutal performance for the Jets, who are all but likely going to fall to 3-7 in what was a must win game in the desert.
Cardinals 24, Jets 6: End of first half
It's now four drives, four scoring plays for the Cardinals' offense as kicker Chad Ryland drills a 37-yarder to give Arizona a three-score lead heading into the break.
In the first half, the Jets defense has easily looked the worst it has all year long. They're allowing seven yards per play and 9.6 yards per pass with QB Kyler Murray nearly unstoppable after going 17-for-19 with 199 yards passing and two total touchdowns through two quarters.
While QB Aaron Rodgers was able to lead the first two drives down the field with ease, they've failed to keep drives going without stalling and settling for field goals.
Davante Adams has yet to record a catch, Garrett Wilson leads the team with only 18 receiving yards and Rodgers is averaging only 3.6 yards per attempt.
Already down 18, the Jets are going to need to repeat their second half magic from last Thursday's win against the Texans and then some in order to come back and win this game.
Cardinals 21, Jets 6: 5:44 remaining in second quarter
Three drives, three touchdowns for the Cardinals as they've now scored on each possession and went 70 yards on all three in the process.
Outside of a helmet-popping sack from Quincy Williams, it's been a brutal day for the Jets defense, who has now surrendered 195 total yards and 13 first downs.
This time, Marvin Harrison Jr. -- the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft -- beat cornerback D.J. Reed one-on-one as he hauled in a perfect, over-the-shoulder throw from QB Kyler Murray, who has been near perfect, currently 13-for-15 with 170 yards passing and two total touchdowns.
Cardinals 14, Jets 6: 11:37 left in second quarter
Jets place kicker Spencer Shrader makes the second field goal in his career to make this a one-score game.
Even though they've been able to move the ball consistently on the Cardinals, the Jets haven't been able to convert when needed to extend a drive and get more than a field goal.
On the 3rd-and-6, a rusher came free off the edge, forcing QB Aaron Rodgers throwing it quicker than he wanted and placing the ball behind a waiting Davante Adams.
Cardinals 14, Jets 3: 2:54 remaining in first quarter
The Cardinals second drive was no different from the first, with QB Kyler Murray picking apart the Jets defense, going 70 yards on nine plays as the QB easily walked into the end zone to extend their lead to double digits late in the first quarter.
Arizona already has 125 yards of total offense.
Gang Green's defense clearly has had no answer early on, allowing more points to the Cardinals (14) than they did in the Week 9 victory against the Texans (13).
Cardinals 7, Jets 3: 7:48 left in first quarter
Gang Green gets on the scoreboard as Spencer Shrader -- the team's third place kicker in as many weeks -- makes his first career field goal attempt from 25 yards.
It was a solid mix of run and pass on that drive, with Rodgers connecting with three different pass catchers and running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen totaling 35 yards on five carries.
Now it's time for the Jets' defense to respond after that porous first drive.
Cardinals 7, Jets 0: 12:58 remaining in first quarter
Third times the charm for running back James Conner as he scores from a yard out to open the scoring.
This came after Conner had a 45-yard catch-and-run that was initially ruled a touchdown before it was overturned and he was down at the one-yard line.
Not a great start for this Jets defense that dominated the Texans 10 days ago at MetLife Stadium.
