Who will be NY Giants quarterback in 2025 after Daniel Jones benching? See the candidates

EAST RUTHERFORD − Daniel Jones is headed to the bench and Tommy DeVito will start at quarterback when the Giants return to action Sunday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium.

So the Giants have those short-term answers with seven games remaining in another lost season. They are 2-8 and currently sitting fifth in the race for the top overall selection in the NFL Draft, according to Tankathon.com.

But what about the long-term question that looms over the entire franchise: who will be the quarterback for the Giants for the 2025 season? It's not too soon to search for answers and analyze the possibilities with head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen expected to return barring something unforeseen - and disastrous - that would cause co-owner and team president John Mara to go back on the vote of confidence he gave team brass recently.

TOMMY DeVITO: Why the Giants are playing popular QB from New Jersey again

Schoen and director of player personnel Tim McDonnell were in Boulder over the weekend for Colorado-Utah - the Giants have had a continued presence there this fall - where potential top picks, quarterback Shadeur Sanders and cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter are the stars.

NFL Draft 2025 prospects:

Shedeur Sanders, Colorado

Sanders needs to be more consistent with his accuracy and decision-making, but he's got tons of talent and upside. Where does Coach Prime - his father, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders - factor in this equation? Deion has already alluded to possibly making a Manning-type power play at the top of the draft. Sanders has intangibles that would make him an intriguing face of the franchise.

Cam Ward, Miami

ESPN analyst Jordan Reid has compared Ward to Packers star Jordan Love. Ward has some rough edges to smooth out in his game, but he's got impressive arm talent, elite playmaking ability, and the kind "it" factor you want in your franchise quarterback.

Jalen Milroe, Alabama

His consistency as a passer shows up as a question mark. But in big games, Milroe has delivered. He also possesses the physical traits to be successful in the NFL. His development may require some patience, but his explosiveness and instincts as a runner scream upside at the next level. Given Daboll's Alabama's connections, it's not farfetched to see a Milroe-to-the-Meadowlands push if the circumstances presented themselves.

NFL Free Agency candidates:

Sam Darnold, Vikings

Would Darnold really be an option to return to the Big Apple? Well, if the Vikings are committed to first-round pick J.J. McCarthy despite a pair of knee surgeries, Darnold would likely hit the market. Can you envision Schoen paying Darnold to be a bridge starter under Daboll's tutelage? It's not perfect, but doable.

Justin Fields, Steelers

Fields is now a gadget player in Pittsburgh, and when he was available for a late-day pick, the Giants did not get involved in trading for him when he was on his way out of Chicago. That doesn't mean he can't emerge as a possible option this offseason.

Russell Wilson, Steelers

The nine-time Pro Bowler is changing the narrative with his solid play for the Steelers this season. On the heels of Sunday's upset of the Ravens, it's hard seeing him leaving the Steel City right now. But crazier things have happened. And he did visit with the Giants before heading to Pittsburgh in free agency.

NFL Trade Market candidates:

Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars

What about this scenario: Jacksonville keeps the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and decides to move on from coach Doug Pederson and GM Trent Baalke, both of whom are under intense scrutiny following the Jaguars' blowout loss in Detroit on Sunday. Could there be a package deal to Jacksonville with Coach Prime and Shedeur as his QB in the pros? Jaguars owner Shad Khan might not shy away from the juice such a circumstance would bring to his franchise.

So where do the Giants fit in that? Go after Trevor Lawrence. Yes, he's got his $275 million - the Giants would not be responsible for all the guarantees, so there are things to figure out. But this would not be the first time an organization moved on when all signs point to ownership standing pat. Would be a shocker, but in today's NFL, would it really be that stunning? Reminder: Lawrence is just 25.

Kirk Cousins, Falcons

As bad as Atlanta looked in Denver on Sunday, Michael Penix Jr. got his first chance in relief of Cousins. Will Penix be the guy for next season? If so, Cousins could be available and Giants could prefer a veteran if Daboll and Schoen don't want to commit to one of the quarterbacks in the draft.

NY Giants roster QB candidate:

Tommy DeVito

DeVito will get the start Sunday against the Buccaneers, and while a segment of the fan base screams "tanking" and another fears DeVito winning a game or two that might cost the Giants a higher draft pick, it's worth mentioning the future fallout.

What if DeVito and Daboll find something over the next two months and he clicks with Daboll as a play caller? DeVito will have to make reads Jones has not made, but let's say he does: Could the Giants turn to DeVito as a bridge QB with more of a long-term view at the position, refusing to force a pick at the top of the draft if the choices do not break their way?

Something to consider as these next seven weeks play out.
