Giants are benching Daniel Jones. Tommy DeVito to start, sources confirm

EAST RUTHERFORD - The Giants have decided to bench Daniel Jones and start Tommy DeVito at quarterback for their next game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, two individuals with knowledge of the situation have confirmed for NorthJersey.com.

Jones has led the Giants to a 3-13 record in his starts since the beginning of the 2023 season - just months after he was rewarded with a four-year contract extension worth a maximum of $160 million in the aftermath of the team's first playoff victory since Super Bowl XLVI.

DeVito grew up in North Jersey in the shadow of MetLife Stadium in nearby Cedar Grove. He played his high school ball at powerhouse Don Bosco and quickly became a fan favorite last season by going 3-3 as a rookie starter when Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor were injured.

With Jones likely having played his last game with the Giants and Drew Lock on a one-year deal, DeVito is the only one with a legitimate chance to be on the roster next season.

The Giants hired Joe Schoen as general manager and Brian Daboll as head coach in January 2022, and their first big decision was to not pick up Jones' fifth-year option in his rookie contract. Jones was coming off a 2021 campaign during which he missed the last six games due to a neck injury. Those were the final games of Joe Judge's head coaching tenure when the Giants embarrassed themselves with the starting quarterback combination of Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm.

It would be shortsighted for the Giants (2-8) to have Jones active for any of their remaining seven games. He has a $23 million injury guarantee that would trigger if Jones were to suffer a serious injury that prevented him from passing a physical when the new league year begins in March.

He hasn’t had a three-touchdown passing game since Week 16 of his rookie season.

Jones had three different head coaches (Pat Shurmur, Judge, Daboll) and five different offensive play callers (Shurmur, Jason Garrett, Freddie Kitchens, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and Daboll).
