Notes from wild 49ers win over Buccaneers
The San Francisco 49ers somehow pulled it off.
After a mistake-filled game they managed to pull out a much-needed win in Tampa Bay over the Buccaneers.
Here are our notes from a wild one in Central Florida:
First quarter
- First play of the game is a handoff to Christian McCaffrey off the left side and he plows ahead for five yards. It's jarring how much differently he moves than Jordan Mason.
- A Deebo Samuel handoff goes for 11 yards. That feels like the first manufactured Samuel touch that has generated an explosive play this year.
- Ouch. Brock Purdy tries throwing to Jauan Jennings back in the middle of the field after rolling right. The throw was there, he just badly missed it up high.
- Another dreadful throw from Purdy on a deep out to WR Ricky Pearsall on a third-and-7. The pocket was clean, Purdy just stepped up and airmailed it. Brutal start for the QB.
- Isaac Yiadom is starting at outside CB with Charvarius Ward out. Renardo Green is also outside with Deommodore Lenoir in the slot.
- First third-down of the game is an easy conversion for the Buccaneers. The 49ers' pass rush is not good.
- Sick tackle by Fred Warner to force a Buccaneers punt. Tampa tried getting a receiver working against DeVondre Campbell, but Warner wound up in coverage and made a terrific play.
- Purdy takes a sack after some indecisiveness in the pocket. This continues to be an issue for him even after the Bye week.
- Another dreadful third-down throw from Purdy. He was looking for George Kittle in the middle of the field and missed high and behind him, which allowed the defender to break up the pass. A holding call on the Buccaneers negated the play and gave the 49ers a first down anyway.
- Jordan Mason is in with 5:00 left in the first quarter. He ran it for five yards on his first carry.
- Whew! Ricky Pearsall gets his first-career touchdown on a 46-yard catch-and-run to put the 49ers ahead. That was some impressive speed from the No. 31 overall pick. The 49ers need him to continue stepping up here in the second half of the season.
- Campbell is really having a tough time keeping up with some of the athletes in Tampa Bay's backfield. They're putting him in a blender.
- Nice work by the 49ers' secondary to help catalyze a sack. The 49ers' pass rush hasn't been effective, but they came up with a sack on a third down after Baker Mayfield had nowhere to go with the ball.
- It's a lot of McCaffrey early. He took a toss that went for no gain late in the first quarter. It was his sixth touch.
- Sick catch from Kittle on another throw from Purdy that was way too high. He's missed high a bunch, but his TE bailed him out that time to finish the first quarter.
Second quarter
- First throw of the second quarter is a checkdown to McCaffrey for his seventh touch.
- Jauan Jennings is so good. He's converted a couple of third downs and Purdy has done a nice job of finding him outside the numbers. It looks like the QB is settling in.
- Tampa Bay is full-blown selling out to stop the run.
- 49ers' first red zone trip with McCaffrey in is unsuccessful. Purdy couldn't find Pearsall on a second down and Kittle on a third down. Jake Moody hit a 28-yarder to cap a 14-play, 77-yard drive. It'll be interesting to see if long drives start wearing the Bucs defense down.
- Nice tackle in the run game by Malik Mustapha. He does a great job of getting downhill against the run and making sure tackles.
- Good tackle by Sam Okuayinonu to stop a screen for a short gain.
- Now a nice tackle in the run game by Maliek Collins.
- The 49ers have no answers for Bucs TE Cade Otton.
- Buccaneers starting LT Tristan Wirfs just went down with what looks like a knee injury. 49ers legend Justin Skule is in for him -- which may change this game from a pass rush standpoint.
- Excellent stop for a loss on a third-down throw into the flat by Campbell. He got downhill quickly to avoid the offensive lineman out in front of the running back. Really nice play by the LB.
- Jennings again! He goes for 30 yards on the first play from scrimmage for the 49ers after a Buccaneers field goal. Terrific run after catch by the big WR.
- Another miss from Purdy on a deep out. He's been bad in this first half, and he's lucky that one wasn't taken for a pick-six.
- Now Moody misses his second field goal on a 49-yard try. What a mess for the 49ers.
- What a gift for the 49ers on a play that would've gone for a first down. Mayfield hit Otton in the chest and the TE didn't hang on to the throw. Overall a shaky first half for the 49ers. They're up 10-3 and they failed to score on their lone red zone trip. Purdy's inability to accurately deliver the ball torpedoed their offense in the first two quarters.
Third quarter
- Bosa is having a really hard time winning against Skule and the various kitchen sink items the Buccaneers are throwing at him.
- Nice pass breakup by Ji'Ayir Brown on Otton to force a punt.
- And there's the weekly special teams disaster. A muffed punt by Jacob Cowing gives the Bucs the ball on the 49ers' 21. Darrell Luter Jr. got run right into Cowing and the rookie WR wasn't able to hold onto the ball.
- Third-and-2 run for Tampa Bay turns into a first down because Bosa left the edge to jump inside. That allowed RB Bucky Irving to bounce to the outside and find room for a first down.
- Touchdown Bucs on a screen to the middle of the field. It's a tie game thanks to another 49ers turnover and some missed tackles. The Bye week didn't do much to help San Francisco, it appears.
- A couple of really nice throws from Purdy to Deebo Samuel under pressure. He's had a not great game, but on a drive where they needed him to play well, Purdy has looked very good.
- Another red zone trip, another mess. Purdy on second-and-goal from the 9 takes an 10-yard sack to set up a third-and-goal from the 19. Their screen went nowhere and they settled for a 33-yard field goal. There's no greater issue facing the 49ers this year than their inability to score touchdowns in the red zone.
- The 49ers defense doesn't have any answers on the ground. Tampa is averaging 4.3 yards per carry so far.
- Blitz from the 49ers leaves a running back wide open for a first down. Mayfield is having no problem getting the ball out quickly and negating anything the 49ers pass rush is doing.
- Good pass breakup by Renardo Green on a deep shot by Mayfield. The 49ers pass rush got home, but Mayfield step up through pressure and made the long throw to the end zone. Green played catch up in coverage and got a hand in to knock it away.
Fourth quarter
- Third-and-2, the Bucs run up the middle for 14 yards. Bosa missed a tackle. The 49ers run defense is getting obliterated.
- Another long run for Irving goes for an easy touchdown. He was untouched for 12 yards. This is an embarrassment for the 49ers defense coming off the Bye week. Perhaps this group just isn't playoff-caliber.
- That's one way to kickstart the offense. Play action roll out to the left has Kittle wide open, and then he looked like vintage Kittle rumbling for 33 yards and breaking tackles.
- Moody missed a 50-yard field goal after the 49ers failed to convert another third-and-long. What an unmitigated disaster this has been for San Francisco.
- Huge stop for the 49ers' defense to force a punt that Cowing returns for a career-best 31 yards. It's hard to have a ton of confidence that the 49ers' offense is going to take advantage of field position at their own 36. Cowing getting a big return after his earlier muff is good to see for the rookie.
- The 49ers' offensive line has had a dreadful time in the run game today. McCaffrey is getting hit a ton at or behind the line of scrimmage.
- What a freaking throw by Purdy, who just threw to an empty spot in the field as he was under pressure. McCaffrey located the ball and ran under it for a huge gain. That was an incredible play.
- Fun end around to Samuel goes nowhere. It looked like Samuel might have been able to get the edge but he just couldn't get there. Maybe the oblique injury is slowing him down, but that's a play we're used to seeing Samuel take for a chunk play.
- Unbelievable play by Purdy for a red zone touchdown. He had nowhere to throw the ball, rolled out to his left and then floated a dot to Kittle in the corner of the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown. Incredible stuff from the QB and the tight end.
- There's Bosa. The Buccaneers finally got in a spot where they couldn't get rid of the ball quickly and Bosa badly beat Skule for an easy sack to force a Tampa Bay punt. San Francisco's defense has stepped up big-time in the two biggest drives of the game.
- More nice work under pressure from Purdy. In a collapsing pocket he made a jump throw on the run to Samuel, who took the throw for 32 yards and a first down well into Buccaneers territory.
- Near disaster for Purdy, who started running and had the ball punched out. Jauan Jennings dove on it for a recovery just ahead of Buccaneers LB Lavonte David.
- Another near disaster. Purdy's third-and-7 throw was tipped straight up in the air, but it fell to the turf.
- Another miss from Moody. That's his third of the game. A complete momentum swing with the Buccaneers taking over with great field position. The Fox broadcast had a good view of the vibes on the 49ers sideline where long snapper Taybor Pepper and WR Deebo Samuel got into a heated argument that involved Samuel shoving Pepper.
- Mayfield missed badly on a third-and-7 on a play where his receiver was wide open. The 49ers got lucky there.
- Then Mayfield follows that up with an unreal play where he tossed a completion while stiff-arming Bosa. That was remarkable and maybe the only time we'll ever see that happen. Mayfield is a baller.
- Nightmare for the 49ers. They bring an all-out blitz on third-and-7 and Fred Warner gets called for a face mask after an incompletion. Just a brutal, brutal mistake.
- It apparently doesn't matter though because the 49ers can't get Mayfield on the ground. The pressure has been there, but San Francisco isn't finishing the job. He drew a roughing the passer flag on Maliek Collins for a high hit.
- Another flag on the 49ers defense. Their fourth of the drive. This time DT Evan Anderson is whistled for illegal hands to the face.
- Sick play by Anderson on a second-and-goal at the goal line to come up with a tackle for loss.
- Nice work by the 49ers defense to hold after a mistake-filled drive. The Bucs tied it with a field goal, but stiffening up to avoid the touchdown was big-time. Tampa Bay had all the momentum.
- Wow. Moody for the win. What a drive by San Francisco to get in field goal range. Big catches by Jennings and Pearsall helped set it up.
Final score
49ers 23, Buccaneers 20
