No. 4 Alabama tops No. 1 Georgia late in a wild battle of heavyweights
(This story has been updated to add new information.)
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.— Kirby Smart and the Georgia football team nearly completed a miraculous comeback that few saw coming Saturday night.
ABC national television viewers who shut off their TVs won’t believe what happened in a wild 41-34 Alabama victory at newly named Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Down and seemingly out at halftime, No. 1 Georgia outscored No. 4 Alabama 27-3 to take the lead on a 67-yard touchdown pass from Carson Beck over the top of the defense to Dillon Bell with 2:31 to go.
Alabama’s offense came to life once again with a score with 2:18 to go.
Freshman phenom Ryan Williams scored on a 75-yard touchdown, catching it on the sideline and spinning away from two Georgia defenders and racing into the end zone.
Georgia (3-1, 1-1) moved the ball to the Alabama 20, but Beck was picked off in the end zone by Zabien Brown in the end zone with 42 seconds to go.
The Crimson Tide (4-0, 1-0) ran out to a stunning four-touchdown lead in less than 18 minutes to lead 30-7 at the half, but Georgia's comeback included a Bell touchdown run with 5:39 to go.
The loss snapped Georgia’s 42-game regular season winning streak dating back to the 2020 season and was their ninth loss to Alabama in their last 10 games.
Here are three things we learned
Alabama continues to have a hold on Georgia in compelling games
New coach Kalen DeBoer picked up where Nick Saban, the legendary now retired coach, in continuing to be a bugaboo for the Bulldogs.
The former Washington coach won his first SEC game and dealt Smart his sixth loss in seven games against Alabama.
Smart returned to Tuscaloosa for just the second time as Bulldogs coach and left on the wrong side of the final score again.
Alabama ruined Georgia’s Blackout on Sept. 27, 2008 when Smart was Saban’s defensive coordinator. The then No. 8 Crimson Tide led 31-0 at the half and won 41-30 against No. 3 Georgia.
That's what this felt like in the first half.
On this night, it was Alabama, not Georgia, that looked like a national championship contender. Until Georgia did in the second half.
Alabama scored on its first four scoring drives including going 70, 84 and 67 yards.
Georgia meanwhile gained 4, 2 and 6 yards on its first three offensive possessions.
Alabama led 28-0 with 12:24 to go in the second quarter.
Milroe rushed for two touchdowns, threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jamarion Miller and got a 7-yard touchdown run from wide receiver Germie Bernard.
Alabama outgained Georgia 355 to 153 in the first half and that was misleading because Georgia went 56 yards on its last possession before the half that ended at the Alabama 36 when time ran out.
Jalen Milroe beats Georgia again
Milroe went up against a Georgia defense that had not given up a touchdown this season and had his way with it.
Milroe rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries in the first half while shredding the Bulldogs to the tune of 18 of 21 passing for 199 yards and a touchdown.
“You know Alabama has been very explosive tonight,” Smart told ABC at halftime “We have no answer for Milroe. He’s a great athlete, phenomenal athlete. We struggled with tackling. We don’t have the edges.”
Milroe finished 27 of 33 for 374 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception and rushed for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns on 16 carries,
On the opening drive, Milroe set the tone by rushing for 30 yards on four carries and completing all three passes for 44 yards.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound redshirt junior hit Emmanuel Henderson for a 34-yard connection, beating Julian Humphrey. Christen Miller had a chance to corral Milroe in the backfield but he got loosed for 7 yards and finished the drive by going into the end zone through a big hole on the left side on a 7-yard score.
Seemingly everything went Alabama’s way. Freshman phenom Ryan Williams caught a third quarter deep ball he juggled after spinning and snatching it for a 54-yard gain.
Carson Beck, Georgia offense battles back
With NFL scouts watching from the press box, Carson Beck gave talent evaluators plenty to consider for a player who could be the top quarterback in the 2025 draft.
Beck fell to 0-2 against Alabama as a starter. He’s 16-0 against everybody else.
Beck was 8 of 17 in the first quarter for 100 yards and two interceptions for the first time in a game in his college career. He lost a fumble early in the fourth quarter when Qua Russaw stripped the ball away.
Beck wasn’t helped by drops on the night including by Arian Smith and Oscar Delp.
He finished with three interceptions but was 27 of 50 for a career-high 439 yards and three touchdown passes.
Georgia was just 3 of 15 on third-down conversions.
Beck and the Bulldogs were coming off the Bulldogs lowest offensive output-262 yards—since a season opening win over Clemson in 2021. They finished this one with 519 total yards.
