No. 3 Wimberley enters 2024 season as one of Central Texas' top football teams

A closer look at the Wimberley Texans, the No. 3 team in our Central Texas preseason countdown.

No. 3 Wimberley

2023: The Texans went 10-0 in the regular season for the second straight year and lost 35-33 in the Class 4A DII semifinal to Bellville.

2024: With QB Cody Stoever and a handful of key players returning, optimism is high again. The Texans should roll through District 13-4A DII without any problems, but how deep they go in the playoffs could largely depend on a defense led by LB Ty Thames (121 tackles, 11 sacks last year). With Stoever taking the wheel again, it's a safe bet Wimberley will score big.

Notable lossess: WR Noah Birdsong, RB Chase Carson, RB Colton Schmidt, WR Wynston Burttschell

About the Texans: Wimberley had one of the state's best offenses last year, averaging 50.2 points a game. The Texans' lowest point total of the season came in the 35-33 loss to Bellville. This marks head coach Doug Warren's 12th year at the helm. He earned his 100th career victory during a 72-0 win over Manor New Tech last fall. Among the notable players who are expected to have an impact are RBs Maverick Jacobs and Josh Belanger, who played on the JV last fall.

NO. 4 IN OUR COUNTDOWN: Why Weiss should be one of Central Texas' best

Betcha didn't know: When he's in the weight room, Stoever does four extra repetitions for every set. This is how his math works: When he was stopped short of the goal line in last year's loss to Bellville, officials ruled he missed the end zone by 2 inches. Stoever believes he was 2 inches in the end zone. That's a 4-inch difference. Therefore, four extra lifts in the weight room.

Key game: Wimberley at LBJ, Sept. 13 — This is intriguing because both believe they have the pieces to make a run in the Class 4A state playoffs. LBJ, which is in Division I, has reloaded with quality players on both sides of the ball. Division II Wimberley is 20-0 over the past two years in regular-season games.
