No. 3 Texas football's strong start spurs road romp of Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — On Saturday afternoon, Texas football earned a big win in the Big House.

Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers threw three touchdowns and No. 3 Texas forced three turnovers in a 31-12 win over No. 9 Michigan at Michigan Stadium. With the win over the NCAA's defending champion, Texas improved to 2-0.

While visiting the all-time winningest program in college football's history, the team with the fourth-most wins elected to receive the opening kickoff. That was a notable decision since Texas had deferred after 16 of the 19 coin tosses that it won during the first three years of the Sarkisian era, but the Longhorns appeared ready to send a message.

On the opening drive, that message was sent when DeAndre Moore Jr. hauled in a touchdown toss from Quinn Ewers. The 24-yard score, however, didn't count. Texas right tackle Cameron Williams, the co-SEC offensive lineman of the week who was flagged twice for false starts on the opening possession, was called for a hold. Two plays later, Texas missed a 43-yard field goal.

Texas responded to that early setback with scores on its next four possessions. Behind Ewers' 21- and 5-yard touchdown passes to Gunnar Helm and Matthew Golden, Jerrick Gibson's 7-yard touchdown run and Bert Auburn's 26-yard kick, UT took a 24-3 lead into halftime.

Michigan never got any closer than 18 points in the second half. Texas added Jaydon Blue's 7-yard touchdown catch to the scoring summary in the third quarter.

In defeat, Michigan (1-1) had its 16-game winning streak snapped. The Wolverines hadn't lost at home since 2020.

Texas will return to Royal-Memorial Stadium next weekend for a home game against UTSA. After winning its season opener by 12 points, UTSA (1-0) was set to play rival Texas State on Saturday afternoon.
