No. 23 Texas Tech basketball overcomes 10-point deficit to topple TCU: 3 takeaways

Down by 10 with 7:24 left, the No. 23 Texas Tech basketball team went on a tear down the stretch Tuesday night to take down TCU 82-81 in Big 12 Conference action inside United Supermarkets Arena.

The Red Raiders, playing without Warren Washington again, got contributions from everywhere to make up the deficit in the final minutes.

Tech prevented TCU from sweeping the season series and improved to 19-7 overall and 8-5 in Big 12 play. The Horned Frogs fell to 18-8 and 7-6.

Fouls and gambles

For much of the first half, the Red Raiders looked stagnant on offense. It's never easy trying to operate without big man Warren Washington in an offense designed to run through him, no matter how many times they've had to do it as of late.

Robert Jennings, and then Darrion Williams, were each called for two fouls at the 7:06 mark of the first half. That put the Red Raiders in a bind, but Grant McCasland took a gamble late in the frame.

With 2:06 left, McCasland put Williams and his two fouls back into the game, this time at the five spot where McCasland has been reluctant to use the Nevada transfer throughout the season.

The line only last one minute, two seconds, put it brought some life back to Texas Tech, which outscored TCU 6-2 in that span and used an 8-2 run to go into the break tied at 38.

Emanuel Miller, Jameer Nelson Jr. carry the load for TCU

Each time the Horned Frogs needed a basket to quell a Texas Tech comeback surge, Emanuel Miller and Jameer Nelson Jr. provided one.

At the 7:24 mark of the second half, Miller and Nelson had combined for 20 of TCU's 29 points, outscoring the Red Raiders by themselves, who had 19 points at that point.

The Horned Frogs also had four guys in double figures before Darrion Williams became Tech's third.

Red Raiders never fully die at home

Even with a 10-point deficit in the second half, the Red Raiders, with another packed crowd behind them, made another comeback.

Timely plays from Isaacs, Williams and KyeRon Lindsay gave the Red Raiders a Tech a 75-73 lead with 1:27 and the Red Raiders held on for what was a crucial victory in the team's race to finish in the top portion of the Big 12 conference standings.

What's next?

The Red Raiders will play three of their next four games on the road starting with Saturday's trip to Orlando to take on UCF. The game will air at 3 p.m. on ESPN+. Texas Tech won the first meeting in Lubbock 66-59.
