No. 2 Georgia football withstands Florida's fight to pull out tight rivalry win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla .— The way Georgia football had its way with Florida the past three years, some might have thought the Bulldogs would take it to the Gators wherever the game was played.

Jacksonville this year or next. Atlanta in 2026. Tampa in 2027. Heck even even in Valdosta or Boca Raton.

The No. 2 Bulldogs instead found themselves in a major fight Saturday,

Florida lost dynamic freshman quarterback DJ Lagway and still went to the halftime locker room up by a touchdown with a walk-on quarterback forced into action. The game was tied midway through the fourth quarter.

Georgia won 34-20 after scoring the game’s final 14 points before an EverBank Stadium crowd of 76,307.

Carson Beck overcame a three-interception day and connected with Cash Jones on a 22-yard touchdown with 1:30 to go in the third quarter to go ahead, but Florida tied the game on a 15-yard touchdown run from Ja’Kobi Jackson.

Beck hit Dominic Lovett on a screen and he went by a defender for a 10-yard touchdown with 4:01 to go.

After a Florida turnover, freshman Dwight Phillips scored on a 4-yard jet sweep for the final score.

Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC) won its fourth straight over Florida (4-4, 2-3) for the first time since winning six in a row from 1978-83.

Here are three things we learned from this win:

Georgia football QB Carson Beck's interception issues continue

Beck threw for 309 yards on 25 of 40 passing with two touchdown, but his three interceptions stuck out for much of the game

Beck threw two interceptions in the second quarter and a third on his first pass of the second half to give him 11 on the season.

Beck’s interceptions early in the second quarter were turned into 10 points for Florida.

Beck threw into double coverage and cornerback Devin Moore picked it off and returned it 32 yards.

On the next play, Lagway connected on a 43-yard pass to Aidan Mizell to make it 7-3 with 13:42 to go in the second quarter.

Beck had decent protection over the middle on his second interception, but his pass intended for Dillon Bell was underthrown. That led to a Trey Smack 32-yard field goal.

Beck had only six interceptions last season.

“It’s pretty simple, don’t turn it over,” Kirby Smart told Georgia radio’s broadcast at the half.

Georgia football had plenty to overcome

It might not be a pretty film review for Georgia, but the Bulldogs withstood missing two defensive starters — Dan Jackson and Joenel Aguero — due to targeting penalties in the first half.

It had to make do without leading rusher Trevor Etienne, who exited the game in the second quarter with what ABC said was a rib injury.

Walk-on Jones made what has to be his biggest play as a Bulldog for the go-ahead touchdown.

He caught a pass over the middle, stayed on his feet after breaking a tackle and dragged two Florida defenders into the end zone with 1:20 to go in the third quarter.

It came after a 51-yard field goal try never got off after a low snap from Florida snapper Rocco Underwood.

Losing DJ Lagway put Gators in uphill battle

Georgia is trying to win its third national title in the last four years. Florida has a third-year coach whose job could be in danger during a rugged November schedule.

Having Lagway leave the game with a left hamstring injury with 5:01 to go in the second quarter would seem to have drowned Florida’s chances here in a stadium by the banks of the St. Johns River.

Florida still got 10 points with Warner thrown into the fire. The Gators had already lost starter Graham Mertz to a season-ending knee injury. Warner joined the Gators in the spring from Yale where he did not play in his one season.

He was 2 of 3 for 30 yards this season and went 7 of 22 for 66 yards with an interception Saturday.
