No. 10 Georgetown enters 2024 season as one of Central Texas' top football teams

No. 10 Georgetown

2023: 6-5, 5-2 in District 11-5A Division I (4th). The Eagles fell 41-25 in their bi-district playoff game to Smithson Valley.

2024: After two years in the "District of Doom" with no weak teams, Georgetown has moved to Region II and again placed in one of the deepest districts in the state. The Eagles won't have to deal with College Station and A&M Consolidated anymore, but District 8-5A Division I has Lake Belton, which has plenty of talent, along with usually stellar Cedar Park and stout Rouse. There are no easy district foes, and any playoff berth will be earned. Returning starters — 4 offense, 5 defense

Notable losses: RB Andrew Petter, QB Noah Booras, All-Central Texas DB Garrett Lloyd, LB Mason Goggans

HIGH SCHOOL COUNTDOWN: Why Georgetown comes in at No. 10

Georgetown's Dylan Turbeville works out during preseason practice Monday. The Eagles enter the 2024 season as one of Central Texas' top teams after moving into a different region and district this year.

About the Eagles: Georgetown perennially reloads, and this season will be no different. The defense, paced by LB Seth Warren, will lead the way with talent and depth at all three levels, while the offense has a pair of wide receivers in Xavier Warren and Davyn Sedwick that might be the most dangerous pairing you don't know about. If sophomore quarterback Kaleb McDougle adjusts well to the varsity game and there's an adequate running game, Georgetown can challenge for a district title. Its defense will keep it in every game.

A CHANGE OF PACE: Georgetown is known for high-flying offenses. But its defense may be key in 2024

Betcha didn't know: Junior wideout Xavier Warren is receiving a lot of attention from college scouts after running sub-4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash this summer. He received an offer from Mississippi State and seems poised for a breakout year.

Key game: Rouse, Oct. 10 — Georgetown's district schedule is backloaded ending with Lake Belton and Cedar Park, and a win here likely gives the Eagles a shot at entering November playing for a district title.
