Nick Saban breaks down film of Texas' Arch Manning vs UTSA: Watch

In the days after the first extended action of his young college football career, Arch Manning got the opportunity to re-watch his performance in tedious detail and receive feedback from Texas’ coaches.

The group of people who broke down Manning’s film went far beyond the walls of the Longhorns football facility — including the most decorated coach in the sport’s history.

As part of his analyst responsibilities for ESPN and “College GameDay,” former Alabama coach Nick Saban reviewed some of the key plays from Manning’s outing in Texas’ 56-7 rout of UTSA last Saturday.

The plays Saban went over were Manning’s 19-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore Jr., his 67-yard touchdown run and a sack he took late in the second quarter.

Overall, Saban came away impressed, not only in Manning, but Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, who worked as Saban’s offensive coordinator at Alabama from 2019-20.

“The thing I love most about it is the confidence Sark shows in his players,” Saban said.

Saban was heavily involved in Manning’s recruitment, with Manning visiting Alabama before ultimately committing to Texas.

After entering the game in the second quarter to relieve an injured Quinn Ewers, Manning showed why he was the No. 1 overall recruit nationally in the 2023 class. He completed nine of 12 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns while adding 53 rushing yards.

“He shows really good athleticism, kind of like his grandfather, Arch,” Saban said while going over Manning’s touchdown run.

Even the lone negative play of the review, the sack for a loss of 10 yards, was revealing for Saban, who showed some of the options Manning had before he was brought down by a blitzing UTSA linebacker.

Saban described the situation, a third down with “different kinds of looks,” as “the hardest thing for young quarterbacks.” It’s something Saban believes Manning will learn from as he heads into his first career start Saturday against Louisiana Monroe.

“I don’t think there’s anything like experiencing playing in a game,” Saban said. “He’s going to learn from every one of these mistakes that he makes in practice, but he’s also going to learn more when it happens in a game.”
