NHL Market Closely Watching Former Flames Forward, Bidding War Possible

In recent updates from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Florida Panthers have begun contract negotiations with current center and former Calgary Flames forward Sam Bennett. Bennett's unique combination of skill and aggressive playstyle makes him a highly sought-after player, and several teams are closely monitoring the situation as discussions progress.

It's not clear if the Flames would be one of them watching to see where this all goes, but a reunion in Calgary wouldn't be a terrible idea.

Friedman emphasized the appeal of Bennett, stating, “Good centers are hard to find, and Bennett is a good center—a big piece of that team.” His ability to perform in a role that is increasingly difficult for teams to fill further underscores his importance to the Panthers.

The Flames don't exactly need a center. They have Nazem Kadri, Martin Pospisil, Mikael Backlund, Justin Kirkland, and Kevin Rooney. Not to mention, they have a load of wingers who can play in the middle of the ice. But, with the future of much of the roster uncertain during a retool, and Bennett much younger than many of the names mentioned, it can't hurt the Flames to keep tabs on this situation.

Bennett fits the age cycle of the Flames a bit better than some of their current pivots. He also knows the market and the team well.

Bennett Likely to Sign with the Panthers

While the negotiations are ongoing, Friedman noted that there appears to be a willingness from both sides to reach an agreement, though no deal is finalized yet. The Panthers and Bennett's representatives are beginning contract talks, but there is a feeling he won't come at a discount. Many eyes watching to see if he will ultimately hit the open market.

Bennett's performance and potential availability could have significant implications for the Panthers and other teams in the league, as a player of his caliber could be a difference-maker.
