Seahawks TE Greg Olsen's foot injury could cost him the season

Seattle Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen suffered a fascia tear in his left foot on Thursday night, coach Pete Carroll said, potentially closing the book on his 14-year NFL career. The injury could keep him out for two months, placing his return deep into a potential Seahawks run, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said.

Olsen injured the foot early in the fourth quarter of a 28-21 win against the Arizona Cardinals. It was a non-contact play and he started to hop to the sidelines before calling for trainers.

Pete Carroll: Potential rupture for Olsen

Carroll addressed the injury after the win:

“It’s a little early, but he has a fascia tear injury that he’s had before in his other foot,” he said, via the Seattle Times. “He knows exactly what it is and sometimes when it ruptures like it did, we think it’s the best thing for a quick recovery. So we’ll see what happens and wish him the best and hopefully he can make it back. The fact that he’s already had this before really helps him understand what’s coming up.”

He was asked if he meant “make it back” this season or next season.

“I don't know that yet,” Carroll said. “There's been some marvelous returns for guys who do rupture their fascia that would blow you away. Right now, he's in really a lot of discomfort and all that. But we'll see what happens. I can't tell you anymore. It's pretty early to be talking about it.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Friday morning that Olsen did rupture the plantar fascia and will be out “two months or so, at least.” That would put a return deep into the playoffs in mid-January.

Olsen ruptured the plantar fascia in his right foot two years ago while with the Carolina Panthers. The injury occurred on Dec. 2, 2018, and he was done for the rest of the season. It came after a Jones fracture in 2017 that kept him out for nine games and a re-injury of it in September 2018 that kept him out four weeks.

The 35-year-old parted ways with the Panthers and appeared headed to the broadcast booth given his work calling NFL games and XFL games on Fox.

Instead he signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks (7-3) worth $7 million, with $5.5 million guaranteed. He has 23 catches for 224 yards and a touchdown playing in every game this year.

Fox has kept the door open for him to join their team full-time when he does decide to retire from football.
