NCAA Tournament results: Updates for every NCAA Tournament game today
Only in the NCAA men's basketball tournament can a team say that it's good to be number 11.
All three 11-seeds won their games on the opening round matchups on Thursday, yet the triumvirate were not responsible for the biggest shockwave of the first full day of play.
No. 14 Oakland takes home the crown of biggest upset so far as the Golden Grizzlies the put No. 3 Kentucky Wildcats out of the tournament 80-76 on an over 48% shooting performance from beyond the arc, draining 15 three-pointers on the way to the second round.
Ten of those three-pointers came from the hands senior guard Jack Gohlke, tying the second most in an NCAA tournament game.
The upset was nearly felled by a cold spell at the charity stripe as the Golden Grizzlies shot 56.5% at the free throw line but junior guard Trey Towsend sunk the free throw of the game to send Calipari's kids back to Lexington.
The higher seeds cruised in the rest of the early afternoon slot as No. 7 Texas handily dispatched No. 10 Colorado State 56-44, No. 2 Iowa State beat No. 15 South Dakota State 82-65 and No. 5 Gonzaga beat No. 12 McNeese State 86-61
So far, the rest of the day has been chalk heavy though two No. 11 seeds toppled No. 6 seeds as Duquesne beat BYU and Oregon beat South Carolina.
Ducks' guard Jermaine Couisnard put up 40 points in the win over the Gamecocks.
In the barn burner of the early afternoon slate, No. 7 Dayton charged back after trailing by double digits in the second half to edge out No. 11 Nevada.
The nightcap has No. 2 Tennessee vs. No. 15 St. Peters, No. 4 Kansas vs. No. 13 Samford, No. 6 Texas Tech vs. No. 11 NC State and No. 7 Washington State vs. No. 10 Drake on the marquee. The Volunteers are up by 16 over the Peacocks at the half.
Under 1% of brackets remain perfect after Gonzaga's win, according to the NCAA March Madness X, formerly Twitter, account.
