Nashville Predators fall to New Jersey Devils as home woes continue at Bridgestone.
With four past captains — Shea Weber, Tom Fitzgerald, Kimmo Timonen and Mike Fisher — in attendance, the Nashville Predators were in search of their second consecutive victory Tuesday night against the New Jersey Devils at Bridgestone Arena.
By the end, it was mission not accomplished by the Predators, who fell to the Devils 4-2 and dropping their home record to 14-14-0 in the process.
Ryan O’Reilly’s scored a power-play goal 4:04 into the first period to give the home team a 1-0 lead. It was O’Reilly’s 19th goal of the season.
After Jack Hughes tied it 1:30 into the second during a four-on-four, Luke Evangelista looked to have put the Predators back ahead. On-ice officials never signaled it was a goal but decided to review the play, which resulted in the call on the ice standing.
Tommy Novak’s 10th goal of the season 7:01 into the third briefly pushed Nashville’s lead back to one, but Jesper Pratt tied it 2-all a little shy of five minutes later.
Timo Meier’s score with 5:15 remaining, emerged from a scramble and gave the Devils their first lead of the game.
Nico Hischier capped the victory with an empty-netter late in the third.
Juuse Saros made 42 saves for the Predators.
The Predators began the day two points out of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Nashville defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who played his 900th career game Tuesday, assured the Predators would begin their post-All-Star break schedule with a victory when he scored in overtime Saturday against the Arizona Coyotes, after his team erased a two-goal deficit in the third period.
Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald was the first captain in Predators history. He also was part of the final trade made by former Nashville GM David Poile.
The Devils are 26-22-4. The Predators are 28-23-2.
