Juuse Saros pulled, Matt Duchene scores twice as Predators suffer another embarrassing loss
The Nashville Predators followed an embarrassing loss Tuesday with a more embarrassing loss Thursday.
Two days after coach Andrew Brunette said his team doesn't seem too interested in making the playoffs, his Nashville Predators had a chance to prove him wrong when they faced former Predators Matt Duchene and Craig Smith and the Dallas Stars at Bridgestone Arena.
The Predators didn’t do much convincing during a 9-2 loss during which Duchene and Smith scored during Dallas’ four-goal first period that chased Juuse Saros to the bench. Dallas’ eight goals tied for the most the Predators have allowed in one game in franchise history.
Saros allowed four goals on 18 shots. Duchene finished with two goals and two assists.
Meanwhile, it took the Predators nearly 14 minutes to register their first shot on goal, the same number they ended the first period with.
Sam Steel needed just 35 seconds to push the puck past Predators goalie Saros to give the Stars a 1-0 lead on their first shot on goal.
Four minutes later, Duchene’s 20th goal of the season, and first of two in the game, doubled Dallas’ lead. Seven minutes later it was former Predator Craig Smith’s turn to score against his former team to make it 3-0.
Cole Smith finally put the Predators on the board with 10:10 left in the second period to cut the deficit to 5-1.
After Tyler Seguin’s power-play goal made it 6-1, Tommy Novak’s 11th goal gave Nashville its second goal.
By the time the third period began, the Stars were ahead 7-2.
Two more goals in the third cemented the score.
The Predators now head on the road for a five-game trip, which starts Saturday in St. Louis.
The Predators are 27-25-2 and have lost five of six. The Stars, who have won three in a row, are on top of the Central Division at 34-14-6.
The Predators were coming off an embarrassing 4-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils, during which they twice gave up leads. The loss left the Predators still outside a playoff spot in the Western Conference and left Brunette and his team fuming.
