The shorthanded Vegas Golden Knights made Monday a long night for the Nashville Predators.

And Mark Stone, who had a hat trick, was a big reason why the Predators began their three-game road trip with a 3-1 loss to the defending Stanley Cup champions.

The Golden Knights' top scorer, Jack Eichel (19 goals, 25 assists), was placed on injured reserve Sunday. Others out with injuries for Vegas include Adin Hill, Shea Theodore and William Karlsson.

Vegas record its first shot on goal until around 15 minutes into the first period.

Less than 30 seconds later, Mark Stone put the home team up 1-0 with his rebound goal, which was his 13th score of the season. Stone’s second goal of the game, and 14th of the season, came 1:11 into the second period to push the home team’s lead to 2-0. His third goal came late during the second and gave his team a 3-1 advantage.

Luke Evangelista’s ninth goal of the season, a tip-in with 2:38 left in the second period, cut the Predators’ deficit to 2-1. Alex Carrier and Roman Josi were credited with assists on the score.

Jonathan Marchessault’s empty-net goal with 18.5 seconds remaining secured the victory for the Golden Knights.

Nashville was coming off a thrilling 3-1 victory against the New York Islanders on Saturday and had won three of four.

The Predators (24-18-1) hold the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference, two points ahead of the Edmonton Oilers and Seattle Kraken.

Filip Forsberg is tops on the Predators in goals (22) and points (48) and is tied for 10th in goals in the league. Roman Josi has a team-best 29 assists.

The Predators play the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday and the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday. They don't return home until Jan. 22 when they face the Florida Panthers.
