Nashville Predators to face Vancouver Canucks in first round of Stanley Cup Playoffs
The Nashville Predators finally know their opponent for the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
When the Dallas Stars beat the St. Louis Blues 2-1 in a shootout on Wednesday night, the Stars earned the point they needed to clinch the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. As a result, the Vancouver Canucks finish as the No. 2 seed.
This means the Predators will face the Canucks in a best-of-7 series. The Canucks will have home-ice advantage.
The NHL has not released the schedule for the first round of the Western Conference. On Wednesday, the league announced Game 1 dates for every matchup in the Eastern Conference. It seems likely the Predators and Canucks would start their series on either April 21 or April 22.
For the last week − after the Predators clinched a playoff berth with an overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets − the Predators' first-round opponent has been a mystery. The Canucks have been the most likely opponent, though the Stars and Edmonton Oilers were possibilities as well.
Now coach Andrew Brunette can start game planning to take on the Canucks, a team that beat the Predators in all three meetings this season.
BRUNO'S ADVICE: Andrew Brunette has hilarious advice for Nashville Predators players ahead of playoff run
Here's the Western Conference first-round matchups after Wednesday's results:
Dallas Stars (1) vs. Vegas Golden Knights/Los Angeles Kings (8)
Vancouver Canucks (2) vs. Nashville Predators (7)
Winnipeg Jets (C2) vs. Colorado Avalanche (C3)
Edmonton Oilers (P2) vs. Vegas Golden Knights/Los Angeles Kings (P3)
The final puzzle piece is whether the Golden Knights or Kings will finish third in the Pacific Division. If the Golden Knights beat the Ducks on Thursday, they will clinch third place. For the Kings to clinch, they need the Golden Knights to lose in regulation and earn a win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Neither result changes anything for the Predators, who are locked into the top wild card spot and are headed to Vancouver for the first round.
