Mississippi State baseball vs. Virginia score, highlights: Virginia walks it off, MSU will face elimination in NCAA regional
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Mississippi State baseball is in the winner's bracket of the Charlottesville Regional, where a meeting against host and No. 1 seed Virginia awaits on Saturday.
MSU (39-21), the No. 2 seed, opened play at Davenport Field on Friday with a 5-2 win against No. 3 seed St. John's. The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs early on a two-run blast from Logan Kohler. However, the Red Storm battled back to tie the game shortly after.

FINAL: Virginia 5, Mississippi State 4
Virginia started the bottom of the ninth inning with a leadoff double to center field that was mere feet from being a walk-off home run. The Hoos then drew a walk and advanced a runner to third on a fielder's choice.
With runners on the corners, Bobby Whalen put a ball in play to bring Harrison Didawick home and walk it off.
Mississippi State 4, Virginia 4, middle ninth inning: Bulldogs leave two runners stranded
Virginia freshman pitcher Matt Augustin struck out two Bulldogs to start the ninth inning before walking David Mershon. That brought Dakota Jordan – who hit the walk-off home run in the 10th inning Friday – to the plate.
Jordan hit a single through the left side to get runners on the corners and keep the inning alive for Mississippi State. But Hunter Hines grounded out to second to end the top of the ninth tied 4-4.
Both teams fail to capitalize with runners in scoring position in eighth inning
Mississippi State got a leadoff walk in the eighth inning and got runners on the corners with Logan Kohler's single. Kohler even stole second to get two runners in scoring position, but Aaron Downs struck out looking to leave the game-winning runs stranded.
Virginia got a runner on second base, but then Tyson Hardin struck out the next two batters to end the inning still tied up 4-4.
Mississippi State 4, Virginia 4 after seven innings
The Bulldogs got runners on base in the top of the seventh, but they couldn't add any more insurance runs to their lead. It came back to bite them in the bottom of the inning when Virginia tied the game on a two-RBI single up the middle.
Bryce Chance makes it around the bases on an error to give MSU 4-2 lead
Bryce Chance was about to get picked off at second base. But the throw was off and went to center field, and Chance made it all the way to home plate to give Mississippi State a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Mississippi State responds in the third inning with three-run homer
The Bulldogs didn't take long to respond to the two-run deficit. With two outs on the board, Mississippi State hit two singles in a row. David Mershon and Dakota Jordan both got on base to tee up a three-run homer to center field for Hunter Hines.
It was Hines' 54th career home run, which moved him into a tie for fourth all-time in program history. The home run gave Mississippi State a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning.

Mississippi State vs. Virginia prediction
Mississippi State beats Virginia, 4-3: Typically, the first day of action features the best pitching. However, UVA has saved its ace for the second day while Mississippi State has the luxury of having a strong second option. Between Cijntje and Blanco, I expect a low-scoring contest. However, with Jordan getting hot, he could be the difference against a left-handed pitcher.
