Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo to miss Game 5 against Heat with ankle sprain

The Milwaukee Bucks will be without Giannis Antetokounmpo on Tuesday afternoon.

Antetokounmpo will miss Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series against the Miami Heat on Tuesday with a right ankle sprain, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Antetokounmpo re-injured ankle in Game 4

Antetokounmpo first injured his ankle in the first quarter of their Game 3 matchup against the Heat on Friday when he rolled his ankle while starting to drive to the hoop at the top of the key. He finished that game and said after that the injury didn’t bother him, but was spotted limping away from the arena afterward.

The reigning league MVP returned for Game 4 of the series, but went down in the second quarter. Antetokounmpo crashed to the ground while driving to the rim, screaming in pain and grabbing his ankle as he did so. He was fouled on the play and shot his free throws, but then left the court and didn’t return.

Antetokounmpo averaged 29.5 points and 13.6 rebounds per game this season, both career-highs in an impressive outing to follow up his MVP campaign last year. The 25-year-old has averaged 26.7 points and 13.8 rebounds in the postseason at Walt Disney World.

Despite losing Antetokounmpo on Sunday, the Bucks rallied back and then held on in overtime to grab their first win of the series — which kept their postseason alive.

Milwaukee trails Miami 3-1 heading into Tuesday’s matchup.
