Mike White released by Miami Dolphins; Skylar Thompson is Tua Tagovailoa's backup

The Miami Dolphins are releasing quarterback Mike White, league sources confirmed Sunday.

White was Tua Tagovailoa's backup in 2023, but the Dolphins will move forward with Skylar Thompson.

Thompson outperformed White in training camp and preseason, sealing the deal with a good performance on Friday night at Tampa Bay.

Thompson is stronger-armed, more athletic and less cost-prohibitive.

Perhaps the Dolphins will use the cost savings on White toward adding an interior offensive lineman or defensive tackle as leage-wide cuts occur between now and 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Thompson has actually started a playoff game for Miami, when Tagovailoa was hurt. Thompson has developed in some areas since he was a 7th-round draft pick from Kansas State in 2022.

Thompson, 27, has seven regular-season games played and two starts.

White is a native of Pembroke Pines and attended University School in Davie.

White grew up a Dolphins fan, so surely this is a disappointment.

But with a Sunday release, he can more quickly explore options.
