Mike Norvell is pleased with what he has seen from his FSU receivers. Here's why.

Florida State football players participate in practice on Wednesday, Aug. 14

The switch is starting to turn on for the Florida State receivers.

In the last few practices, FSU's offense has been clicking on all cylinders, with the season opener against Georgia Tech being only nine days away until kickoff.

Throughout the fall camp, Norvell has challenged his wide receivers as they struggled with consistency with ball drops and getting beat against the secondary.

Norvell praised his receivers Thursday for responding well this week of practice.

“ I thought they really raised the level of their game here this week," Norvell said.

"And you know, about another good day, and just competitiveness with them, the defensive backs and how those guys are challenging and working with each other to go get better has been really, really good."

Norvell spotlighted specific receivers, including his go-to target, Malik Benson, who had a great camp overall.

He also mentioned Jalen Brown, who Norvell believed could be a key contributor, seniors Darion Williamson and Ja'Khi Douglas, and freshmen Elijah Brown and LaWayne McCoy.

Each receiver Norvell mentioned has a role in creating the level of depth in the corp, as he must replace Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson from last year.

Norvell looks forward to developing and pushing them as they prepare for the 2024 season.

“ We throw a lot on them," Norvell said.

"There are many different dynamics, elements, depths, where you're supposed to be, and any potential adjustments to our route. But then when you find yourself in the moment to go make the play, you got to go make the play."

Mike Norvell wants young players to embrace being on scout team

It's not easy for a player to be assigned to be a scout player. Some might take it as a level of frustration. For Norvell, he expressed the value of being a scout team member and that it goes unnoticed.

Norvell mentioned running mock games for the upcoming practices. The Seminoles are in the middle of installing plays to prepare for Georgia Tech's appearance in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland.

“You want guys that may embrace every opportunity to go get better," Norvell said.

Norvell also expanded on it by naming guys like Patrick Payton and Joshua Farmer as scout players earlier in their FSU careers before they became All-ACC performers.

"When you see that as an opportunity, rather than you know anything beyond that, it's it's going to open the door for you to take the next step," Norvell said. "And I'm excited about the ability of those young guys and just the opportunity to go and improve.”
