Michael Penix Jr. unlikely to start vs Seahawks in Week 7

If you were hoping to see some of the top rookie quarterbacks play against the Seattle Seahawks this year, you might be disappointed with a couple. Last week, it was announced the New England Patriots are likely to start veteran journeyman Jacoby Brissett instead of No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye in Week 2 when the Seahawks travel to Foxboro. Now, it seems Seattle won’t see another (familiar face) rookie quarterback.

D. Orlando Ledbetter told Tacoma News Tribune’s Gregg Bell that former Washington Huskies standout Michael Penix Jr. is not slated to start against the Seahawks. The plan for now is to stick with Kirk Cousins, who was signed for a four-year, $180 million contract this offseason.

The Falcons selecting Penix No. 8 overall was the biggest headscratcher of the 2024 NFL draft because of the presence and commitment to Cousins. At age 24, he is not a spring chicken by NFL standards and is now sitting behind a veteran who is under contract for the next four seasons. Certaintly, it will be disappointing for Seattle fans to not see Penix suit up, as many of them spent the last two years rooting for him at Washington.

As it currently stands, of the top six quarterbacks taken during the 2024 NFL draft, the Seahawks are only slated to face two as of now. The Denver Broncos are likely to start Bo Nix in Week 1, and Caleb Williams has already been named the start for the Chicago Bears – Seattle’s Week 17 opponent. The Minnesota Vikings have yet to name a starter between Sam Darnold and rookie JJ McCarthy, and the Seahawks are not slated to play Jayden Daniels’ Washington Commanders during the regular season.

Of course, this is the NFL we are talking about. Anything could change, as the league truly is week to week. But as of now, Penix will be riding pine when the Seahawks travel to Atlanta.
