Miami's Dewan Hernandez ruled ineligible by NCAA amid basketball scandal
Miami forward Dewan Hernandez lost his appeal with the NCAA on Thursday and has been declared ineligible for the season, according to the Miami Herald.
Hernandez was held out of the Hurricanes’ season-opener in November due to eligibility concerns after he was implicated in the FBI’s investigation into corruption in college basketball, and has not played since. Miami, an Adidas school, was also implicated in the scandal.
Hernandez — who changed his name from Dewan Huell before the season — allegedly had a deal in place to be paid by Christian Dawkins while playing at Miami.
“I disagree with the determination made by the NCAA,” Hernandez’s attorney, Jason Setchen, told the Miami Herald. “In my opinion, they have implied facts and drawn conclusions without sufficient support in the record to justify such conclusions. It is very unfair to Dewan. I am discouraged by the decision. I genuinely believed they’d treat him fairly and reinstate him. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
“Coach [Jim] Larranaga and his staff were very supportive throughout the process. I am grateful that they stood by Dewan.”
The 6-foot-11 junior averaged 11.4 points and 6.7 rebounds last season for Miami, playing nearly 26 minutes per game. Hernandez can make one final appeal if he wants, or he could instead simply start preparing for the NBA draft.
Miami is currently 8-4 on the season.
