Miami held center Dewan Hernandez from season opener over eligibility concerns
Miami center Dewan Hernandez — formerly Dewan Huell — was held out of the Hurricanes’ season-opener against Lehigh pending a review of his NCAA eligibility, the university announced less than 20 minutes before tip off on Friday night.
“University of Miami junior Dewan Hernandez will be withheld from competition as the university and the NCAA review his eligibility,” the Hurricanes said in a statement, via the Miami Herald.
Hernandez’s eligibility concerns link back to the FBI’s investigation into corruption in college basketball. Miami, an Adidas school, has been implicated in the scandal, and Hernandez was named in a report earlier this week.
Hernandez — who recently changed his last name from Huell — allegedly had a deal in place to be paid by Christian Dawkins, according to ESPN. Dawkins — the former middleman for ex-NBA agent Andy Miller who was found guilty earlier this month — allegedly planned to pay Hernandez $500 each month from September 2017 to January 2018, and then $1,000 each month through April 2018. If he left Miami after the 2017-18 season, he wouldn’t have to repay the money. If he did return, it would be converted into a loan, according to the report.
The 6-foot-11 junior averaged 11.4 points and 6.7 rebounds last season for the Hurricanes, averaging nearly 26 minutes per game.
The Hurricanes cruised to an 83-62 win against Lehigh on Friday night. Ebuka Izundu started at Center for Miami in Hernandez’ place, and put up 10 points and nine rebounds in the win.
